September 2026 Sports Preview
August was the month of new beginnings and saw the return of many of the biggest sports tournaments in the world. Football fans will know that the English Premier League started the 2026/2027 season, along with many other football leagues, including the Betway Premiership. International Test rugby also returned to Mzansi, with the much-anticipated Greatest Rivalry Tour between New Zealand and the Springboks kicking off.
Fortunately, sports fans do not have to worry about the action slowing down. In this sports preview in September 2026 it shows how packed with sporting action it will be and brings golf, rugby, football, basketball, racing and athletics to our screens. Furthermore, the Carling Currie Cup 2026, which we mentioned in the August Sports Preview, will come to an end in September. Here are some sports betting September 2026 fixtures to look out for.
Currie Cup Update
The Currie Cup is South Africa’s oldest rugby competition and has brought the best provincial rugby to South Africa for over a century. The tournament also acts as a breeding ground for upcoming Springbok players who gain valuable experience by competing at professional level. We touched base on the Currie Cup in the August 2026 Sports Preview, and September continues the trend.
The Currie Cup consists of eight teams from around the country. This includes the major four teams, the Sharks, WP, Lions and Bulls, who all gain automatic entry into the competition. The other four spots go to the top four finishing teams in the SA Cup. This year, those teams are the Pumas, Boland, Cheetahs and Griquas. The competition is short, with each team playing only seven matches before heading into the semi-finals.
The group stage came to an end at the end of August. Griquas and Cheetahs have dominated this season and have already secured their places in the semi-finals. They will face the Lions and Pumas in the semi-finals. The semi-finals take place on 4 September, with the final following on Saturday, 12 September. Pundits will be happy to know that bookmakers offer many betting markets on the Currie Cup. The most popular betting markets include:

The Greatest Rivalry Tour
The long awaited Test series called the Greatest Rivalry between New Zealand and the Springboks kicked off at Ellis Park Stadium on 22 August. The first match is one that many Bok supporters would like to forget, with the All Blacks scoring five tries to one to win the match 33-16.
The two teams then travelled to Cape Town to play the second match at DHL Stadium on 29 August. Coach Rassie Erasmus made changes to his team, but the Springboks won the second match 33-26.
The third match will see the teams return to Johannesburg to play at FNB Stadium just outside Soweto on 5 September. The fourth and final match of the Greatest Rivalry Series will take place outside South Africa in Baltimore, America, on 12 September.
The organisers will stage the game in the US to grow interest in rugby as the country prepares to host the 2031 Rugby World Cup.
Formula 1 Update
The 2026 Formula 1 season is one of the most exciting seasons in recent years. The sport has turned a new leaf, with up-and-coming drivers finishing on podiums. Kimi Antonelli has been the driver on everyone’s lips this season.
The 19-year-old Italian Mercedes driver has been the one to beat this season. Kimi currently leads the drivers’ standings after winning six races and finishing on the podium 10 times so far. His teammate George Russell follows him, while Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari sits alongside Russell in second place. Both drivers have 183 points on the log.
Mercedes leads the Constructors’ Championship with 425 points. However, there are still 11 races left in the year, which could give the other teams enough time to catch Mercedes. Ferrari sits in second place with 338 points, ahead of McLaren on 263 points.
The Three Formula 1 Races in September
Formula 1 fans are in for a treat in September 2026 as we can see in this Sports Preview, with three races taking place during the month.
The first race is the Italian Grand Prix, which takes place on 6 September. Monza is known for its speed and ranks among the fastest tracks on the calendar. Around 80% of the 5.7km track runs almost at full throttle, while the 1.1km straight gives drivers plenty of space to reach high speeds.
The race is usually a one-stop affair. Monza is Ferrari territory, so we should see one of their drivers finish on the podium.
Next up is the Spanish Grand Prix, which takes place in Madrid on 13 September. This will be the second race in Spain this year but the first time Formula 1 races on the newly built track.
The Madring Grand Prix is 5.4km long and has 22 corners. The track uses a hybrid layout that combines public roads with a purpose-built race track.
The final Formula 1 race in September takes place at the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan on 26 September. The track is the longest of all the circuits on the season’s calendar, with a distance of just over 6km.
If Mercedes secures a podium finish at each of these races, they could build a lead that proves too difficult for any other team to overcome before the end of the season.
South African and International Football
Many international football competitions, including the Betway Premiership and MTN8, started in August. The MTN8 semi-finals finished at the end of August, with Orlando Pirates beating Sekhukhune and Golden Arrows beating Sundowns to secure their places in the final on 13 September.
The Betway Premiership (PSL) had four matchdays in August. Orlando Pirates go into the September fixtures as the log leaders with 10 points, holding a three-point lead over Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu, who all sit level in second place.
There are a few notable fixtures between the top teams that are definitely worth watching. On 6 September, Mamelodi Sundowns and Arrows will meet again, although this time in a Premiership match.
Kaizer Chiefs will take on Polokwane City on 12 September. Both newly promoted teams have performed exceptionally well and sit fifth and seventh on the log.
Durban City and Milford will meet for their first clash in the Premiership on 19 September.
CAF Championship
Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns finished at the top of the PSL 2025/2026 season, which gave them entry into the CAF Champions League. Mamelodi won last season, giving them direct entry into the Second Preliminary Round.
Pirates, however, will play against La Cure Sylvester SC in the first leg of the First Qualifying Round on 5 September, with the second leg taking place on 12 September.
EPL Fixtures
Only two rounds of matches took place in the English Premier League during August. Man City, Hull and Chelsea are all tied at the top of the table going into September.
There are a few not-to-be-missed matches taking place in the EPL in September. On 13 September, the Manchester Derby between Man City and Manchester United will take place. This is definitely the biggest match to watch.
Another match worth watching takes place between Newcastle and Hull on 19 September.
FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup
The 20th edition of the Basketball World Cup for Women will take place in Berlin during September. The 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup features 16 countries, with the teams placed into four groups of four.
The countries include America, Spain, Germany, Mali, Hungary, France, South Korea, Nigeria, Turkey, Japan, Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico, Italy and China. America has dominated the tournament, winning the last four editions and 11 titles in total.
The tournament is fairly short and starts on 4 September before finishing on 13 September.
America goes into the tournament as the favourite to win, but other countries will certainly challenge them. America is the team to beat based on the available odds, which put them at 1.25 to win.
Pundits see France and Belgium as their biggest competition, with both teams at odds of 10.00 to win. Australia follows at 15.00.

2026 Solheim Cup
The Solheim Cup can be compared to the Ryder Cup for women. The tournament takes place every two years and sees 12 of the best female golfers from Europe and America compete against each other.
This year, Europe will host the event, with Bernardus Golf Club in the Netherlands chosen as the venue for the 2026 edition 7 to 13 September 2026.
America goes into the tournament looking to retain the title they won in 2024. However, the odds suggest that this will be a very close tournament. America is slightly favoured to win at 1.91, while Europe sits at 2.10.
Angela Stanford will captain the US team, while Anna Nordqvist leads Europe.
The Solheim Cup uses a match-play format. Players therefore try to win individual holes rather than compete over the lowest score across 18 holes.
The days split into three categories. Friday and Saturday mornings feature foursomes, while the afternoons feature four-ball matches.
Foursomes see two players team up and share one ball, taking alternate shots. The pair with the lowest score on a hole wins it.
Four-ball uses two-player teams, but every player plays their own ball. The best score from each team counts on every hole.
Sunday features 12 singles matches. Singles matches see one player go head-to-head with one opponent. The player who wins the most holes takes the point.
Outright betting is a favourite bet on the Solheim Cup. It simply involves betting on which team will win the cup this year.
The 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship
The upcoming World Athletics Ultimate Championship is an exciting brand-new competition that will take place in Budapest from 11 to 13 September.
The Championship will feature the very best athletes in track and field from around the world. This inaugural edition of the tournament features 28 different events across athletics.
What makes this competition so important is the huge prize pool available to the winners, as well as the money paid to every participant. A total of $10 million will be split between the athletes.
The competition takes place over three days, so athletes go directly into semi-finals and then finals instead of competing in the heats used at other athletics competitions. Some events, such as the 1500m and 5000m, go straight into the final.
So far, the South African 4x400m relay team has been confirmed as a participant. The names of any other South African athletes who will participate will be announced closer to the event.
The Proteas Women T20I Against Zimbabwe
The Proteas Women are heading to Zimbabwe for a historic five-match T20I series, with the tour marking a first for the two neighbours in women’s international cricket.
SA Women Cricket will look to build momentum ahead of a busy international schedule, while Zimbabwe will be eager to test themselves against one of Africa’s strongest sides.
The T20 matches take place on 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 September at Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Proteas Men
The Proteas have a busy schedule ahead for the rest of 2026. They start their campaign in the inaugural Tri-Series T20I between South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The first round of the Men’s SA Cricket Test series consists of six Test matches between 28 August and 4 September. The final match of the neighbouring countries’ Test match will take place on 6 September.
All the matches will take place at the Namibia Cricket Grounds in Windhoek.
The Proteas will stay in Namibia after the Tri-Series, where they will face the Eagles in three ODIs. The tour starts on 9 September and finishes on 13 September. All the matches will take place in Windhoek.
The tour should give the Proteas confidence heading into their next Test series against Australia.
Australia will tour South Africa to play a total of six matches, including three ODIs and three Test matches. The first ODI will take place in Durban at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium on 24 September.
The second ODI will take place in Joburg on 27 September, while the third ODI will take place in Potchefstroom on 30 September.
The major ODI betting markets include match winner, total match runs, top run-scorer, top wicket-taker and most sixes.
Live betting also offers markets such as fall of the next wicket, method of dismissal, boundaries and over-by-over markets, depending on the bookmaker.

Berlin Marathon
The Berlin Marathon always falls on the last weekend in September, and this year it takes place on 27 September.
The marathon forms part of the World Marathon Majors and sees 54,000 people participate in the 42.1km race.
The route is mostly flat and has a smooth surface, making it one of the best courses for breaking records. The first Berlin Marathon took place in 1974, and the course record stands at just over two hours, with a time of 2:01:09 set in 2022.
A lot of betting takes place on the race, and betting on the outright winner can be difficult. However, here are a few runners who are seen as the favourites.
Milkesa Mengesha from Ethiopia returns to defend his title after winning last year. He will undoubtedly face a challenge from Gabriel Geay from Tanzania and Kengo Suzuki from Japan.
The women’s race looks like an all-African affair, with all three of the top runners in the field coming from the continent. Ethiopians Tigst Assefa and Amane Beriso Shankule, alongside Rosemary Wanjiru from Kenya, are seen by pundits as the athletes most likely to win the race.
Betting on who will win is always a big market at the Berlin Marathon. Leading nationality is another popular betting market that allows punters to bet on which nationality will produce the winners.
Ethiopia seems to be the best bet in this market.
