The 2026 Currie Cup
The winter months in Mzansi might be bitterly cold, but it’s nothing that the Curry Cup rugby can’t fix. Indeed, the kick-off to the oldest provincial rugby competition in the world is around the corner, and this year promises to be even more exciting than last season.
Few can forget last year’s thrilling final where the Griquas won the title against the Golden Lions, thereby ending their 55-year drought. Interestingly, the name Curry Cup comes from Sir Donald Currie, who donated the trophy for a match against an English touring side in 1881. Since then, the competition’s first official tournament was held in 1889, with Western Province winning the most titles so far with 35.
The Teams within the Currie Cup
The Curry Cup is made up of eight provincial teams. Four of these teams automatically qualify for the competition through competing in the URC and include the Fidelity ADT Lions, Hollywoodbets Sharks, DHL Western Province and the Vodacom Bulls. Meanwhile, the remaining teams have to earn their spot in the competition by qualifying through the SA Cup. As a result, the qualified teams that will be playing in this year’s competition are the Toyota Cheetahs, Suzuki Griquas, Airlink Pumas and the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers.
How the Currie Cup works
Every team will play seven matches in the regular season, which comprises seven rounds, thereby ensuring every team plays all the other teams on the log once. Thereafter, the top four teams on the log will subsequently progress to the semi-finals on 5 September. Lasty is the final match which will be played a week later.

Overall, the Curry Cup is the perfect tournament to see up and coming South African talent perform. Furthermore, the competition has been loved by rugby supporters for well over a century and continues to be a breeding ground for the Springboks. Thus, the teams that qualify through the SA Cup have smaller budgets than the bigger teams.
