October 2023 Sport Preview
October 2023 is off to a running start with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India. They have been seeing a lot of rain since the warm up games started so lets hope it clears up for the big games from the 4th of October. Then we also have New Zealand Women touring SA facing the Proteas in ODI’s asof 24 September – 15 October 2023.
Also the excitement surrounding the ongoing RWC 2023 is electrifying! As you can see October is jam packed with so much for everyone. The September 2023 Sport Preview was packed with Golf, Tennis, Formula 1 and the start of the RWC 2023. So let us break down the events for this month in our October 2023 Sport Preview.
Ongoing Sports Events
PSL: With the PSL Season well on its way there is still plenty to look forward to. See our article, PSL 2023, for the competing teams and further details.
EPL: There is so much action in the EPL. Arsenal along with Man City and Liverpool are almost guaranteed a top 4 finish at this stage. The fight for relegation is also heating up with Everton, Luton, Bournemouth, Burnley and Sheffield United hot on each others heals.
Rugby World Cup 2023: The last games are upon us as of the 5th of October before we know who will be in the Quarter Finals. So much can still happen and change dependent on the game results. Will Ireland remain 2nd or kick the Boks down to second in the last Pool games? Can Italy beat France? Will the Scots come out steaming against the Irish? So many possibilities! SA vs New Zealand, Women’s Cricket: New Zealand is touring SA from 24 September 2023 – 15 October 2023 to face off with the Women’s’ Proteas team. South Africa have already won two matches and New Zealand have won one match. Furthermore the match dates are:
- 6 October 2023 at Buffalo Park
- 8 October 2023 at Buffalo Park
- 10 October 2023 at Buffalo Park
- 14 October 2023 at Willowmoore Park
- 15 October 2023 at Willowmoore Park
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup commences on 4 October 2023 with England and New Zealand facing off on the 5th of October. This will be quite the opening match as they were the last 2 finalists. The warm- up fixtures started on 29 September where the Proteas face Afghanistan and then on 2 October they warm up against New Zealand before the actual matches start! WXV
The WXV kicks off on 13 October 2023. This is a new three-tier annual global women’s international 15s competition. Launched by World Rugby to revolutionise Women’s Rugby. This is the 1st year this tournament will take place and we are very excited to see what will come from this tournament. So pop these very important dates into your calendar and support our Women’s Springboks! It has also been announced that Babalwa Latsha has been named the SA Captain.
- Scotland v South Africa on 13 October 2023 – Danie Craven Stadium.
- Italy v South Africa on 20 October 2023 – Athlone Sports Stadium.
- South Africa v Samoa on 27 October 2023 – Athlone Sports Stadium.

Tennis
To win his 24th Grand Slam singles title, Novak Djokovic overcame Daniil Medvedev, the third-seeded player, in the US Open final, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Djokovic rushed to the victory after three hours and seventeen minutes by putting everything he had into the crucial situations. Tournaments to look out for in October 2023 are:
