December 2023 Sport preview
2023 has been packed with so many special events and our South African sports men and women have out performed themselves. We can be a proud nation indeed! The Springboks won their 4th RWC, the Protea men played some incredible cricket and the Protea women made it to the T20 final. And that is only the tip of the iceberg.
Furthermore November 2023 sport preview saw the conclusion of some epic events. Therefore in our December 2023 Sport Preview we cover all main sport events for December and will close the sport previews for 2023 on a high note.
Ongoing Sport Events
South African Open: 30th November – 3rd December 2023 will see 156 golfers get together for an epic battle.
EPL: With 30 points, Arsenal has jumped into top place. In addition, Man City has gained two spots to place 2nd with 29 points, while Liverpool has climbed up to third place with 28 points. Spurs have slid to fifth place with 26 points, while Aston Villa has moved up to position 4 with 28 points. In addition, the top 4 have very little point difference. UEFA Champions League: The gift that continues to give is the UEFA Champions League! The following important dates will provide fans an amazing slate of matches.

Spain La Liga: First place is shared by Real Madrid and Girona, who have 35 points apiece and are separated only by goal differential. Additionally, Barcelona is in fourth place with 31 points, and Atletico Madrid is in third place with 31 points. Important dates to note in December:

Up-Coming Sports Events December 2023
- Cape Point Challenge: The Cape Point Challenge is a surfski competition that starts in Scarborough/ Witsand and finishes on Fish Hoek Beach. It is a 52km race and will be on the weekend of the 16th of December 2023.
- Beach Volleyball World Pro Tour Finals: In Qatar 6 to 9 December 2023.
- Bobsleigh World Cup: This World Cup will be in France from 9 to 10 December 2023.
- PDC World Darts Championship 2023-2024: From 15 December 2023 to 3 January 2024. Venue will be Alexandra Palace, London.
HSBC Sevens 23/24
The December match weekend in Dubai will mark the return to action of the sevens season. The next leg will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, before the end of the year. It will be intriguing to watch what each squad performs like as the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris draw near.

The HSBC 7’s 2023 was packed with excitement and with the Olympics not to far off this next season the sevens will be one for the history books.

The URC will see many more games play out in December, there will be at least 19 matches to look forward to. However here we list the SA teams games for you:

Boxing
Joshua will fight Otto Wallin while Wilder takes on Joseph Parker in Riyadh on 23 December 2023. Also Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder can set up a fight in 2024 if they both win their separate bouts on the same bill in Saudi Arabia. Cricket Freedom Trophy Series
The two giants in cricket, South Africa and India, will be going head to head in the series once again. Both teams did really well at the ICC World Cup this year and India were the favourites to win. Furthermore local and international fans are ready for a tough series!
This series will be from boxing day, 26th to the 30th December 2023. It is a tradition in SA that we always have a cricket match and series that starts on boxing day. Thus you can say South Africans don’t just like cricket! They love it!
The Freedom Trophy is a cricket trophy that is awarded to the winner of Test series. This is known as The Freedom Series, between India and South Africa. Furthermore the trophy is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, which was first awarded in 2015. South Africa are the current holders of the trophy, can they hang on to it again this time around?
Quick Sport Round up of 2023
The Formula 1 concluded in Dubai in November, Verstappen once again dominated however there are many drivers to look out for next year. So watch this space! Hopefully we will see more drivers challenge for that top spot next year.
The SA sport teams did not disappoint in 2023, they have raised the bar and set new records we can be so proud of. There is a new Domestic Women’s Cricket League on the way and we will see the new established SA20 sponsored by Betway once again in January 2024.
The Women’s Springbok rugby team competed in the very new WXV tournament and managed to stay in division 2 for next year. The women’s 7’s team also qualified for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
Now the SA Hockey teams were on fire as well! Furthermore both the men & women teams qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024.
