The Rugby World Cup Draw 2027

15 February 2026 |

The 2027 Rugby World Cup will be hosted by Australia and will be played from the 1st October with the final being played on the 13th of November. The 2027 Rugby World Cup draw took place on the 3rd of December in Sydney, two years before the kick off of the tournament. This is actually closer to the tournament than the 2023 draw which was done almost 3 years in advance of the tournament.

The early draw is great news for rugby fans when comparing it to the draw for the 2026 Football World Cup. The draw for the 2026 Football World Cup also took place last week but only 6 months before the start of the competition. However this early draw gives people a chance to choose the tickets and games they want to see at the Rugby World Cup 2027.

World rankings are put into consideration when before the draw so that the top six ranked teams do not fall into the same pool. The concern that many have is that the team rankings can drastically change in the next two years which is why the draw should be made closer to the start of the tournament. An example is the 2019 Rugby World Cup where the Springboks came into the competition ranked 8th in world rankings. Hopefully World Rugby will get it right next time.

Team Expansion

The 2027 Rugby World Cup will be the biggest tournament to date in terms of amount of countries participating in the event. The 2027 RWC has expanded and added four extra teams which mean 24 countries will be playing in the tournament. The expansion makes way for a round of 16 before the quarter finals which is a first for world rugby. This will give smaller teams a chance to make it through to play off rounds and hopefully some unexpected upsets.

The expansion of the amount of teams has also meant a change for the for the amount of Rugby World Cup 2027 pools. The pools have grown from 4 pools with 5 teams to 6 pools with 4 teams. This will be first time that Hong Kong China will play in the Rugby World Cup. Zimbabwe also made it through to the competition. This will be the third time that they compete in the world cup. Here is a list of the RWC qualified teams 2027.

Breaking Down the RWC Pools

The tournament draw sets up thrilling action across six competitive pools. In the Rugby World Cup Pool A Draw, New Zealand face Australia, Chile and Hong Kong China in what promises to be a high-intensity battle between Southern Hemisphere heavyweights and rising nations. Meanwhile, Pool B features South Africa, Italy, Georgia and Romania, giving the Springboks a strong European test on their road to the knockouts.

Pool C sees Argentina take on Fiji, Spain and Canada in a dynamic mix of flair and physicality. In Pool D, Ireland and Scotland headline the group alongside Uruguay and Portugal, ensuring a fierce Northern Hemisphere showdown. Furthermore, Pool E includes hosts France with Japan, the United States and Samoa, creating one of the most unpredictable pools in the competition. Finally, Pool F brings together England, Wales, Tonga and Zimbabwe, setting up classic rivalries and explosive encounters that rugby fans in South Africa will not want to miss.

RWC 2027 Format

The amount of matches that will be played has also increased with a few. There will now be 52 matches up from 48 in the last world cup. There is also a change in the amount of matches that teams will play in the pool matches. Teams played four pool matches in previous competitions but this has now been changed to only three matches. This makes sense with the Round of 16 comes into play. The two top teams of each pool will progress to the Round of 16. The other four teams will come from the top four third ranking teams with the most points.

Our World Cup Draw Analysis

This is a possible path the Springboks might take in the 2027 RWC. The Springboks in Pool B have a fairly straight forward path to the Round of 16. Italy could challenge the Boks in the pool round. However, that outcome looks unlikely, as they have won just one of their last 19 encounters against South Africa.

If the Boks go into the Round of 16 as the pool winner, then they will face a third ranked team from either Pool A, C, D, E and F. So they will likely face Uruguay or USA in their Group 16 match. The quarter final is where it gets interesting as they will face either Australia, Fiji or Argentina. Many pundits predict Australia in the QF which will be tough game in front of a home crowd.

Rassie and co could then face Wales, New Zealand of Scotland in the Semis. Which means that the Boks will face either England of France in the final. My bet is on France vs Springboks in the final but at this point it is anyone’s guess. Rugby World Cup betting Odds in South Africa are not available just yet.
