Royal Ascot 2023

18 June 2023 |

Traditionally, the Royal Ascot meeting lasts for five days in the middle of June each year. The dates for the subsequent year are chosen after the current year’s event, which will take place from June 20 to 24 this year.

The royal family and the crème de la crème of British society attend this important event, which is on the social calendar of the country. Since it was founded many years ago, the annual race meeting held at the Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, England, continues to be a blend of pomp, tradition, fashion, class distinction, and sport. So let us have a look at Royal Ascot 2023 which will take place 20-24 June.

History of Royal Ascot

While out riding, Queen Anne came across an area of open heath not far from Windsor Castle and immediately saw the potential for a racecourse for Ascot. She thought it would be the perfect location for “horses to gallop at full stretch.” So, on August 11, 1711, Ascot hosted its first-ever racing event. The Royal Ascot meeting developed from the first four-day race meeting held at Ascot in 1768. However the event’s current form didn’t emerge until The Gold Cup was introduced in 1807. The popularity of racing at Ascot increased, and in 1813, Parliament passed the Act of Enclosure.

This law made sure that Ascot Heath, which was owned by the crown, would continue to be maintained and used as a public racecourse in the future. The Ascot Authority currently oversees the location.

The third day of Royal Ascot continues to feature the Gold Cup, which is customarily the busiest day of the week. Even though each of the five days has its own highlights, the opening day stands out simply because it draws a large contingent of royals and only allows members of the Royal Enclosure to enter by invitation.
