Largest ever political wager on the 2020 US Elections

4 November 2020 |

There is one topic that covers all news today. For once it is not COVID and lockdown measures but the current US Presidential Election 2020. Republicans vs Democrats but moreover Donald Trump vs Joe Biden. Will Donald Trump secure four more years in the Oval office or will Joe Biden be the 46th president of the United States of America? As it stands, it is a very close battle, and we might only know the winner in a few days once all votes are counted.

We personally did not bet on the outcome of the presidential election. But a lot of betting sites around the world and also in South Africa offered punters betting opportunities. The 2020 US election could therefore become the biggest betting event in history with an estimated $1.3 billion (R21 billion) wagered on the run for the White House.

How much would you wager on politics?

And the US Election breaks more records as the biggest ever political wager has also been logged. It is reported that an unknown British businessman has placed a $5 million bet (R80 million) on Trump to win. The bet, placed with a private bookie in Curacao at odds of 37/20, could see him winning almost $15 million (R214 million).

Biden vs Trump

While the polls forecasted Biden to win, Trump currently outperforms pollsters’ predictions. Together with winning the election, Trump could bring the anonymous Brit a big win. Vote-counting currently continues. Therefore, the election result is at this stage still open – and with it the outcome of the biggest-ever political wager.

It will be a close race to the finish line. Trump has secured important states including Florida, Texas and Ohio. Nevertheless, he has to win several more key states to continue being the President of the United States of America. It is going to be a suspense-paced days for the candidates, the world – and the British gambler.
