History of the Giro Cycle race

The Giro d’Italia originated from the success of the Tour de France. Thus aiming to bring a similar cycling spectacle to Italy. Since its inception in 1909, it has symbolized the nation’s cycling culture, enduring through the disruptions of World Wars I and II.

La Gazzetta dello Sport has played a crucial role in its development, introducing the iconic pink jersey in 1931, inspired by the newspaper’s pink pages. This jersey, symbolizing excellence, is akin to the yellow jersey in the Tour de France, captivating audiences worldwide and showcasing Italy’s diverse landscapes.

Primož Roglič’s remarkable performance in the 2023 Giro d’Italia secured his victory, with a standout ride in the penultimate stage.  Representing Jumbo-Visma, he dominated the Stage 19 time trial, claiming the pink leader’s jersey from Geraint Thomas of INEOS Grenadiers.

This win marked Roglič’s fourth grand tour triumph and his inaugural victory at the Giro d’Italia, solidifying his position as a cycling powerhouse. In the same race, Thibaut Pinot emerged victorious in the Mountains Classification, while Jonathan Milan claimed the Points Classification, and João Almeida led the Young Rider Classification.

The prestigious pink jersey, known as the Maglia Rosa, is reserved for the overall leader. Other jerseys include the purple ‘ciclamino’ jersey for the points competition, the blue jersey for the mountain classification, and the white jersey for the best young rider competition.

As the 2024 Corsa Rosa approaches, Tadej Pogacar is the favorite, supported by UAE Team Emirates riders like Novak, Bjerg, Oliveira, and Majka. Sprinters Tim Merlier, Caleb Ewan, and Fabio Jakobsen are expected to compete for stage wins, while contenders like Ben O’Connor, Wout Poels, and Romain Bardet will vie for the general classification title. Despite uncertainties, the Giro d’Italia promises thrilling competition, with riders aiming to make their mark on this prestigious event.
