Why Currie Cup is Later

SA Rugby confirmed that the 2024 Currie Cup will go ahead, thanks to a new player management deal. This agreement addresses the tricky issue of fitting in an eight-week rest period for players in a jam-packed schedule that spans both hemispheres.

The deal between SAREO and MyPlayers recognizes the need for a year-round playing season while ensuring player welfare. After some arbitration drama, it became clear that all players needed an eight-week rest period. So, the new plan includes personalized rest breaks, World Rugby player load guidelines, and strict player monitoring.

Even though there were initial worries about fitting the Currie Cup into the busy schedule without clashing with the Vodacom URC, the Premier Division will start in early July. The revamped format features one-and-a-half rounds and two pools based on last year’s standings. The First Division kicks off even earlier, making sure all teams get plenty of action while keeping player health and the sport’s commercial needs in balance.
