A Thrilling History
In the last match between these two teams, the Springboks walked away defeated. However, this motivated them to improve and work smarter as a team. The last two World Cups have reshaped the Springboks, shifting their entire focus to the team rather than the individual. Therefore, the next three matches between these rugby giants are not to be missed, despite the stress they bring!
The Springboks and Ireland have always had a very strong rivalry, however 2024 feels like the biggest yet following the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Will Ireland be triumphant once again or will the Springboks beat the former number one team in the world?
2023 Rugby World Cup Meeting
Ireland clashed with South Africa at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis during the pool stage of the Rugby World Cup 2023 on September 23. Fans and analysts alike regarded this matchup as crucial. Not only for determining the pool winner but also for deciding which team would claim the coveted number one spot in the world rankings.
In a closely contested battle, Ireland emerged victorious with a score of 13-8. Despite this win, their reign at the top was short-lived; New Zealand ousted them in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, South Africa bounced back from the defeat! And then powered through the competition to lift the World Cup trophy a second time in a row! Which means they have now won the most RWC’s ever with New Zealand a close second on 3.
Squad for first Alignment Camp
The Springboks have announced a 43-man training squad that includes 16 uncapped players, meeting for the first time since their World Cup victory. Rassie Erasmus is back as head coach following Jacques Nienaber’s move to Leinster. He has also included 19 members from the 2023 World Cup squad.
Veterans like Eben Etzebeth, Faf de Klerk, and Willie Le Roux are joined by promising talents such as Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Cameron Hanekom, and Suleiman Hartzenberg.
This camp will be the first chance for new defense coach Jerry Flannery and attack coach Tony Brown to work with the team. Additionally, retired referee Jaco Peyper and former Springbok Duane Vermeulen will make their debuts in their new roles as laws advisor and roving coach, respectively.
The squad’s mostly made up of players from South Africa. However they’ve also brought in four guys from Japan to work on getting over some injuries. Big names like Siya Kolisi, RG Snyman, and Andre Esterhuizen couldn’t join this time around because of their club duties. But they’re all set for the next training camp.
In March, the team got together to gear up for the international season, mixing fresh talent with seasoned pros. They’ve got two more camps lined up before things really get going. The Springboks are kicking off with a couple of home games against Ireland. Then they’re making history with their first-ever game against Portugal.
After that, in July, they’ll head over to Australia for two matches in The Rugby Championship before coming back to play New Zealand on their own turf. There have also been reports of some injuries from the URC however we will have to wait and see who is fit closer to the time.
