Rugby fans in both the Northern and Southern hemisphere know that there is no shortage of rugby tournaments and series to bet on online. The most popular tournaments are the following:
- 2021 British and Irish Lions Tour of South Africa
- The Rugby Championship
- Super Rugby
- The Six Nations
- World Rugby Sevens Series
- IRB Rugby World Cup
- Autumn International Tours
COVID-19 and the Rugby Championship
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, both national and international rugby tournaments have had to find ways of weathering the financial storm. No spectators meant no part of ticket sales and many provincial unions have therefore had to borrow funds to protect their future.
In the southern hemisphere, the annual Rugby Championship between South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina and Australia got reduced to a 3-team tournament. The raining champions and also current world champions opted not to travel to Australia. With most of the Springbok team members not having played any competitive rugby since early 2020, it was considered the safer option.
The tournament however did not disappoint. It was to become the platform for one of Argentina’s greatest ever wins. Argentina and New Zealand have been playing against each other since 1976. The first All Blacks vs. Argentina match taking place in 1985. The 2 teams have battelled it out no less than 29 times, with the Puma’s coming close in 1987 Rugby World Cup in Wellington when they drew the game.
On the 14th November 2020 however, things changed. Argentina beat New Zealand 25-15 to seal a historic victory. All the points being scored by fly-half Nicolás Sánchez.
The famous win also followed the loss of New Zealand to Australia the previous week. This was the first time since 2011 that New Zealand had los 2 games in a row. They did however follow their famous loss up with a thumping 38-0 win over the Pumas the following week.
With a track record like that, we could only imagine the great odds which were available for this match. It shows that there is always a case to back the underdogs while placing your rugby bets. Just remember the now infamous Japan beating South Africa in the 2015 World Cup.
