The 2026 Edition of the La Vuelta a España

19 August 2026 |

The 2026 cycling calendar has been nothing short of spectacular. The Giro d’ Italia produced exciting racing and saw Jonas Vingegaard wining the 3468km gruelling race. Unfortunately, Vingegaard was involved in a crash during Stage 15 of the Tour, where he sustained a broken collarbone.

Next up was the Tour de France (3,333km), where riders broke long-standing records and new contenders proved that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level. Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar showed that he is one of the best by winning his fifth title and thereby placing next to the all time greats. Cycling enthusiast and punters will therefore be happy to know that there are still lots of action to cycling action to come. With the start of the La Vuelta a España is just around the corner.

Part of the Big Three

La Vuelta a España is the third of cycling’s three “Grand Tours” alongside the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. It was first held in 1935 and has been contested every year since 1955. It’s traditionally the last Grand Tour of the season, held in late August/September. Giro has built a reputation for brutal, steep summit finishes. It is arguably the toughest terrain of the three Grand Tours pound for pound.

The La Vuelta 2026 Route

The race is the shortest of the three majors with a distance of 327km. The riders will do over 50 000 meters elevation gain. The race has 21 stages which will take riders through four different countries. Stage 19 is the longest with a distance of 210km.

22 August – Start: Monaco, with a 9.6km individual time trial

The “Grand Depart” La Vuelta usually somewhere in Spain and on the rare occasion in a different country. This year’s race is one of those rare occasions where it starts in a different country. The 2026 La Vuelta will be the first time in the race’s history to start in Monaco and thereby making Monaco the first city to host the opening for all three major cycling races.

Early route: From Monaco the race runs through southern France, then Andorra, before entering Spain on stage five. The riders will then remain in Spain until the finish.

The race features: 4 hilly stages, 4 flat stages, 4 medium mountain stages, 6 mountain stages and 2 individual time trial stages. The riders get two rest days in between the stages after Stage 9 and Stage 15.

Stage 6 introduces sterrato (gravel) sections. This is a rare surface for the Vuelta which adds tactical and mechanical unpredictability.

13 September – Finish: Granada, 99.4km

The finish line for the ’26 Vuelta will be in Granada. 2026 will be the first time that Granada will be the finish city in the race’s history although the city has hosted stages of the race before. The final stage will be a loop that weaves through the city with an uphill finale up to the Alhambra Palace. This makes Granada the race’s most southerly finale since Jerez de la Frontera in 1986. The final stage is not a simple sprint parade. The Alhambra finish is designed to keep the general classification battle alive to the very end.

Jersey Classifications

The Jersey classification is a different colours than the other big races. Red (Maillot Rojo) is for overall race leader/general classification.  Green signifies the points classification or sprinters. The Blue with white polka dots jersey is for the King of the Mountains/climbers’ classification. The best young rider gets to wear the White jersey

Key contenders for the 2026 Vuelta

Tadej Pogača of UAE Emirates-XRG is the overwhelming favourite. He returns to the Vuelta for the first time since his breakthrough Grand Tour debut in 2019. He arrives fresh off winning the Tour de France and his blend of climbing and time-trialing matches this route better than anyone else’s.

Primož Roglič of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe chases a record-equalling fifth Vuelta title after winning in 2019, 2020 and 2021. However, a car hit him during training. Leaving his participation uncertain less than two weeks before the race starts in Monaco.

João Almeida rides for UAE Emirates-XRG. He is one of Pogačar’s own teammates and on a quest to salvage a season derailed by illness. He is potentially his most serious internal competition.

Remco Evenepoel as well as Juan Ayuso are not currently expected to start. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is also expected to skip the race to recover and focus on next season.

Betting and Racing to the 2026 finish line

The La Vuelta offers many betting markets. Overall winner/General Classification is simple and involves betting on the Podium finish, Top 3 finish and Top 5 finish. King of the Mountains and Young Rider classification is another big betting market. This Vuelta might be the perfect time to back a new comer. Explore the markets and odds on sites such as Virgin Bets, SuperSportBet or BetXchange and many more.

If Pogačar brings anything close to his Tour de France level, everyone else is likely racing for the podium behind him. This year is a first of many for the race but will the podium be the same? Therefore here are some of our recommendations for licenced online sites.
