YesPlay Newlands Sponsorship
One of South African cricket’s most iconic grounds is entering an exciting new chapter. YesPlay has become the new title sponsor of Newlands Cape Town and the Western Province Cobras, bringing together a growing South African betting brand, a legendary stadium and one of the country’s proudest cricketing regions.
The four-year partnership with the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) will see the famous ground formally known as YesPlay Newlands, while the newly launched Western Province Cobras will compete as the YesPlay WP Cobras in official brand and broadcast communications.
However, this partnership feels bigger than another name appearing on a stadium or cricket shirt. With investment planned for Newlands and YesPlay’s community-focused YesCares initiative forming part of the journey, it represents an opportunity to strengthen the connection between professional sport, supporters and communities across the Cape.
YesPlay Newlands Begins a New Chapter
Newlands doesn’t need much of an introduction to South African sports fans.
With Table Mountain providing one of world cricket’s most recognisable backdrops and more than 135 years of sporting history behind it, Newlands has become part of Cape Town’s identity. Generations of South Africans have walked through its gates to watch Western Province, the Proteas and some of the greatest international cricketers in history.
Now, its next chapter will unfold as YesPlay Newlands.
The sponsorship forms part of a four-year agreement that makes YesPlay the title sponsor of both the stadium and the Western Province Cobras. The deal was brokered by sports sponsorship agency MegaPro.
Importantly, the partnership arrives alongside continued investment in Newlands itself.
Planned and completed improvements include upgraded hospitality suites, new lift infrastructure, additional wheelchair seating, a secondary scoreboard, refurbished food and beverage areas and upgrades to player, umpire and practice facilities.
Therefore, supporters should see the partnership reflected in more than signage around the boundary.
Welcome Back, Western Province Cobras
There is also a welcome dose of nostalgia attached to the announcement. Western Province Cricket has officially brought together two famous cricketing identities to create the Western Province Cobras.
The new identity combines the long history of Western Province with the successful Cape Cobras era rather than choosing between the two. The official name will be Western Province Cobras, while WP Cobras will become the public-facing identity used across merchandise, supporter communication and commercial branding.
Better still, the identity brings the province’s men’s and women’s professional teams together under the same brand.
For long-time Cape cricket supporters, seeing the Cobras name return should bring back plenty of memories. At the same time, this isn’t simply an attempt to recreate the past. The new brand aims to carry that history forward for another generation. YesPlay will now become part of that story.
More Than Naming Rights
YesPlay CEO Tebogo Makamo summed up the intention behind the Newlands partnership particularly well, saying:
“For YesPlay, this is about more than putting our name on a stadium.”
That distinction matters.
Sports sponsorship works at its best when a brand becomes part of the ecosystem around a team rather than simply buying advertising space.
Newlands already brings together professional players, young cricketers, families, supporters, local clubs, businesses and visitors. Meanwhile, WPCA wants the venue to grow beyond matchdays into a broader destination for sport, entertainment, hospitality, business and lifestyle events.
That creates an opportunity for YesPlay to contribute to something with a lasting presence in Cape Town.
Making a Difference in the Community
Perhaps the most exciting part of this partnership is what could happen beyond the boundary rope.
YesPlay already operates its YesCares social outreach programme, which supports community organisations and initiatives. Its previous projects have included supporting children’s programmes, caregivers and local organisations working directly within South African communities.
WPCA has specifically highlighted YesCares as part of the new relationship with Newlands. That creates plenty of potential.
Newlands sits at the top of a much larger cricket structure. Beneath the professional game are clubs, schools, coaches, volunteers, young players and families who keep Western Province cricket moving every week.
Strong commercial partnerships can help create opportunities throughout that ecosystem. Whether through community programmes, fan initiatives, development opportunities or greater investment in facilities and experiences, there is real scope for the partnership to leave a footprint beyond professional cricket.
Ultimately, the biggest win would be seeing more young South Africans given opportunities to participate in sport and experience Newlands for themselves.
YesPlay Is Building a Bigger Connection with SA Sport
The Newlands announcement also continues an interesting sporting journey for YesPlay.
Earlier in 2026, the operator stepped onto one of South African rugby’s biggest stages as title sponsor of the YesPlay Cup. Which brought the Barbarians to Gqeberha to face the Springboks at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on 20 June. YesPlay also appeared on the front of the Barbarians jersey for the occasion. The match certainly delivered entertainment!
South Africa ran in 12 tries on their way to an 80-31 victory. With Edwill van der Merwe scoring a hat-trick in a memorable start to the Springboks’ 2026 season.
More recently, YesPlay has also backed the South African Deaf Rugby National Team as a Tier 1 Partner. As well as front-of-jersey sponsor ahead of the 2026 World Deaf Rugby Sevens Championships in Tokyo. That partnership focuses heavily on supporting talent, opportunity and greater inclusion in South African sport.
Together, these partnerships suggest a broader strategy. YesPlay isn’t limiting its sports involvement to traditional advertising. Instead, the brand is increasingly attaching itself to teams, venues and sporting occasions with strong connections to South African supporters.
Newlands Has a Huge Summer Ahead
The timing couldn’t be much better either. YesPlay Newlands is preparing for a busy period of international and domestic cricket, with the venue set to welcome the YesPlay WP Cobras, Proteas and MI Cape Town, alongside international touring teams.
Australia, Bangladesh, India Women and England are all part of the wider 2026/27 programme, while SA20 and domestic cricket will also bring supporters through the gates.
As a result, the new YesPlay identity should quickly become familiar to cricket supporters around the country.
However, the longer-term ambition goes beyond cricket. WPCA wants Newlands to become a year-round destination capable of hosting entertainment, hospitality, business, music and lifestyle experiences while maintaining the history that makes the venue special.
Sport, Community and the Next Generation
South African sport has always had an incredible ability to bring people together. Whether it’s thousands of fans singing at a Springbok match or families spending a summer afternoon at Newlands, sport creates shared experiences that cross generations and communities.
That’s why sponsorship at this level matters. YesPlay gains considerable exposure from having its name attached to Newlands and the WP Cobras. However, the real opportunity lies in what the partnership can build around that exposure.
If the combination of YesPlay, WPCA and YesCares can help improve supporter experiences, strengthen community connections and create opportunities for future players and fans, the impact could stretch far beyond a four-year sponsorship agreement.
Time For New Memories!
Seeing YesPlay Newlands written instead of simply Newlands will inevitably take some getting used to. After all, few South African grounds carry the history and emotion that Newlands does.
Yet the exciting part is that the history isn’t being erased.
Instead, Western Province Cricket is bringing the WP and Cobras legacies together, investing in one of South Africa’s great sporting venues and partnering with a brand that has shown an increasing commitment to local sport.
From the YesPlay Cup between the Springboks and Barbarians to South African Deaf Rugby and now YesPlay Newlands and the YesPlay WP Cobras, YesPlay is steadily building a meaningful presence across South African sport.
For Cape cricket in particular, this could be the beginning of something special. Newlands has given South Africans more than 135 years of sporting memories.
Now it’s time to make some new ones!
