WXV Update 2024

So there’s serious excitement in women’s rugby with WXV 2024! After an electrifying debut in 2023, this tournament is raising the bar even higher, featuring three vibrant tiers: WXV 1, WXV 2, and WXV 3. These tiers bought together top national teams from around the globe, offering more chances for female athletes to shine.

16 Teams hit the field, divided into pools within each tier to rack up points based on their performances. WXV1 will spotlight elite squads from the Women’s Six Nations and the Pacific Four Series. WXV 2 and WXV 3 welcomed a mix of teams from various regions, ensuring plenty of inclusivity and fierce competition.

Canada hosting WXV 1, South Africa embracing WXV 2, and Dubai sparkle with WXV 3. Exhilarating games and supporters out in full force, cheering on their favorite teams as they pave the way for an expanded Rugby World Cup in 2025. So let us have a look at how this tournament panned out with our WXV Update 2024.

WXV 1 

In a breathtaking showdown, England clinched the WXV 1 title by beating host Canada 21-12 at BC Place. The Red Roses faced a tough challenge, with Canada taking the lead twice during the match, putting England under serious pressure. Even when the team was down to 14 players at times, their determination shone through, culminating in Zoe Aldcroft scoring a critical try just before the final whistle to secure the victory. 

Earlier in the tournament, New Zealand hit their stride with a commanding 39-14 win against France, driven by Katelyn Vahaakolo’s remarkable hat trick. Meanwhile, Ireland celebrated their WXV 1 debut with a solid 26-14 victory over the USA, finishing strong by scoring two late tries. 

This final round not only highlighted the elite talent in women’s rugby but also underscored the excitement and unpredictability of the tournament. With this win, England extended their impressive streak to 20 consecutive matches, further establishing their dominance in the sport as they set their sights on future challenges. As you can see there is already quite a bit of exciting news in our WXV Update 2024.

WXV 2 

Australia made an impressive entrance into WXV 2 by capturing the championship title with an exciting 31-22 victory over Scotland at Athlone Sports Stadium. The Wallaroos came out strong, quickly establishing a 21-0 lead in the first half. However, Scotland fought back fiercely and even took a brief lead late in the game. Despite the pressure, Australia held their ground to secure the win. 

Both teams celebrated their qualification for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, joining Italy and Wales, who also clinched their spots during the tournament. Earlier that day, Italy narrowly defeated South Africa 23-19, ending the hosts’ title hopes, while Wales triumphed over Japan with a 19-10 victory, improving their position in the standings. 

In the match against Scotland, Australia’s Desiree Miller and Maya Stewart made significant contributions. Both scoring vital tries that helped build their early advantage. Even with Scotland’s spirited comeback, which included a flurry of tries that brought the score closer, the Wallaroos managed to close out the game successfully. This victory not only secured the title but also laid a strong foundation for their future endeavors in women’s rugby . 

WXV 3 

Spain snatched the WXV 3 title in a thrilling match, narrowly defeating Fiji 10-8, which also secured their spot at the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025. The dramatic clash took place in the United Arab Emirates, where the tension was palpable. As the match reached its climax, Fijiana’s Luisa Tisolo had a chance to equalize with a conversion kick. But she missed, triggering wild celebrations among the Spanish team. 

Samoa also earned their World Cup qualification by overpowering Madagascar 46-15, ensuring they will join Spain in England next year. The Manusina team delivered a strong performance, finishing in second place. Meanwhile, the Netherlands capped off their tournament with a commanding 33-3 victory over Hong Kong China, securing third place. 

In the nail-biting final, Fiji struck first with a penalty from Tisolo. However Spain quickly responded, with Player of the Match Alba Capell scoring a pivotal try. Despite a last-minute effort from Fiji,

Spain managed to hold on for the win, claiming the championship and their spot in the upcoming World Cup .

The 2024 WXV tournament ignited excitement across the rugby world, with various teams and players stepping up to leave their mark. Here are the standout Teams in our WXV Update 2024:

England: The Red Roses were unstoppable, clinching the WXV 1 title and extending their amazing winning streak to 20 games. They wrapped up the tournament with a 22-14 victory over Canada. Solidifying their status as reigning champions and gearing up to be serious contenders in the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup. 

Canada: Although they fell short against England in the final, Canada showcased their potential. Captain Alex Tessier led the charge, demonstrating that they could fiercely compete throughout the tournament. 

Ireland: Ireland had a remarkable run, taking down tough teams like the USA and New Zealand. Their opening match victory over New Zealand was particularly impressive, marking a significant step in their evolution as a competitive squad. 

Spain: Spain celebrated a thrilling victory in WXV 3! Edging out Fiji for the title, which also secured their spot in the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup. This win was a massive boost for their women’s rugby program. 

Samoa: Samoa shone in WXV 3, finishing in second place and earning their first World Cup appearance since 2014. This achievement represents a monumental milestone for women’s rugby in Samoa. 

So the Bok Women’s last 2 games against Italy and Australia were very close! They may not have won but the strides they have taken forward this year alone have been immense. We look forward to seeing them perform at the RWC 2025.

Zoe Aldcroft (England): Aldcroft proved to be a powerhouse on the field! Displaying exceptional defensive skills and leadership that were key to England’s triumph.
