It’s get set, go, for the world’s most beautiful marathon

2 April 2025 |

Picturesque Cape Town is getting ready to welcome runners from around the world for the 54th edition of the Two Oceans Marathon. The Mother City becomes a hive of activity over the weekend.

Last year saw between two and three thousand international runners from 80 countries travelling to Mzansi for the race. The marathon is often referred to as the most beautiful marathon in the world as it takes runners from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean.

Running for a good cause

A big part of the Two Oceans Marathon is doing good and giving back to the community. There are hundreds of runners that dress up in full costumes or in anything that stands out of the crowd for a charitable cause. Runners for fun have completed the race in a rhino and banana suit in the past. The organisers are aiming to raise more than 5 million for charity this year. Have a look at the Two Oceans 2024 article for news on last year.

Different events taking place at the Two Oceans

The Two Oceans Marathon consists of three events. These include; the trail run on Friday the 4th of April, the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon on Saturday the 5th and the Two Oceans Half Marathon which will take place on Sunday.

The trail run is made up of two races. One of the races has a distance of 12km and a longer race of 22km. The trail is a curated route along Table Mountain and offers spectacular views.

The Two Oceans Half Marathon is a distance of 21.1km and attracts the most runners with an estimated 16,000 participants taking part this year. The race takes runners on a stunning route through some historic parts of Cape Town. The race starts in Newlands and takes runners down to Constantia and back up again past Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. Runners will finish with crowds cheering them on at UCT Finish Fields in Rondebosch.

The Two Oceans Ultra Marathon 56km

The main event is the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon that will see 13,000 runners take on this gruelling race. The prize money for winning the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon is a whopping R250,000. The route is also covered with thousands of spectators that edge on the runners.

Runners start at the same location as the 21km race in Newlands. The first few kilometres of the race that go through the southern suburbs and lead into Muizenberg are flat. So from there, the runners start on the scenic coastal route through Kalk Bay, St James, Chapman’s Peak and Hout Bay. There is also a respite after the climb of Chapman’s Peak as runners head into Hout Bay. This is followed with the toughest climb in the race coming into Constantia Neck from Hout Bay. Participants will be running downhill in the final stretch of the race, which then finishes at UCT Rugby Fields.

Top athletes in the 2025 Two Oceans Marathon

Woman’s division

South Africa’s Olympian Gerda Steyn is one of the favourites in the woman’s category. Gerda has won the Comrades, Two Oceans and the New York City Marathon. Gerda has only improved her time on the race since winning the first time 2018. She has since then dominated the race and will be hoping to win the title for a record six times in a row.

Fellow South African Olympian Irvette van Zyl is another contender in this year’s race. The long distance runner will be vying to make this her first win after coming in at less than two minutes to Gerda last year.

Men’s division

The men’s division has many male athletes which have focused in this year’s event. Last year’s winner Onalenna Khonkhobe will look to retain his title. He also won the 2024 Soweto Marathon.

Zimbabwean Givemore Mudzinganyama will want to duplicate his performance in the 2023 race where he won the title. He finished the 2024 Two Oceans in third spot. South African Nkosikhona Mhlakwana has had two strong finishes in the last four years and chose to forego the Comrades earlier this year to focus on this race.
