Woman to watch in the 2025 Woman’s RWC
The stage is set, the grass is cut, and the lines have been drawn for the opening of the upcoming 2025 Woman’s Rugby World Cup. The opening ceremony and match will take place at the Stadium of Lights in Sunderland on Friday.
This will be the 10th edition of the competition whose roots can be traced back to 1991 when the first unofficial tournament took place in Wales. The winning country of the inaugural tournament was America who will also be playing in the opening match of the competition against England. This year’s tournament sees 16 countries from around the world participating to be crowned the best in the woman’s rugby. New Zealand is the current title holder having hosted and won the last WRCW in 2021. Only New Zealand, England and America have won the Woman’s Rugby World Cup up to this stage with New Zealand winning it six times.
Cities Hosting the WRWC
Eight cities scattered around England will be showcasing their hosting abilities this year. London’s Twickenham Stadium will be the host of the final match scheduled to be played on the 27th of September. Other cities hosting include, Bristol, North Hampton, Exeter, Manchester, York and Brighton and Hove. The smaller stadiums such as York, Manchester, Exeter and North Hampton will only host pool matches due to their size.
And off course the opening match will be on 22 August 2025 at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, England. This is where England will be facing USA in Pool A.
Countries Participating
There are 16 countries playing in this year’s competition. Organizers place each team into a group of four. Each team will play one match against the other three teams in the group. The two teams with the highest points on the board after the pool stage matches make it through to the quarter finals.
South Africa was drawn Group D alongside Brazil, France and Italy. Bok Women’s first match will be 24 August 2025 against Brazil in Northampton. Next up, the squad heads to York to face Italy on 31 August. Before returning to Northampton to tackle France on 7 September.
Top Rugby Women to Follow 2025
While every player in this year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup shines, a few stand out and deserve special mention as Top Rugby Women in 2025.
England’s fullback Ellie Kildunne is first on the list. The 2024 player of the year is known for her explosive attacks and breaking through the line. The fullback also bolsters Red Roses’ defence. English Captain and player of the year in 2017 Zoe Aldcroft, has led the team in an astonishing winning streak and leads the team on their WRWC campaign. Fly half Holly Aitchison is also worth a mention as she creates the opportunities for the backline.
New Zealand winger Portia Woodman-Wickliffe needs no introduction and will be running out for the All Blacks at this year’s tournament. She is has the experience and the pace to bring a lot of momentum to the team.
Aoife Wafer plays flank for Ireland is one of their star players. Her physicality and defence forms a key part of Ireland’s strategy. However she will be missing their opening match due to knee surgery recovery. Lets hope she makes an appearance!
Desiree Miller playing winger for Australia and poses a threat with her scoring capabilities. Analysts list her as one of the top five to watch during the WRWC. She plays alongside full back Lori Cramer who is an experienced finisher and plays well consistently.
Woman to Watch in the Springbok Team
Springbok woman’s Captain Nolusindiso “Cindy” Booi is the Mzansi’s golden girl. She is also the most capped player in the team with this being her fourth competition. Cindy plays lock and brings a wealth of experience to the team. Last but not least is Ayanda Malinga. Ayanda’s quick and agile abilities stem from her time playing sevens rugby. She is a lethal finisher and will bring pace to the South African team. No surpside they rank in Top Rugby Women 2025!
