January 2024 Sport Preview

Welcome to the New Year and everything the sport world will have to offer in 2024! We have the much anticipated Afcon 2024 around the corner and much much more to keep you entertained.

We closed out 2023 with a bang with our December 2023 Sport Preview. Therefore as we look forward to 2024, we’re excited about what the world of sports has to offer. In order to provide you with your monthly feed of sports, we will update you on a monthly basis. Therefore let’s now look at it in our sport preview for January 2024.

Soccer Action Update

EPL: The rankings have changed significantly during the past few weeks. After three losses in their last five games, Arsenal has plummeted to fourth place with 40 points. With 45 points and no losses in their past five games, Liverpool has risen to the top in first place. Furthermore with 42 points and just one loss in their last five games, Aston Villa has climbed into second place. With 40 points remaining and one defeat in their last five games, Man City has slid to third position. Despite having the same number of points, Man City and Arsenal are separated by a goal differential and a match. Tottenham remain in 5th position with 39 points and only 1 match lost in the last 5 games.

La Liga: With 45 points, Real Madrid is still in first place, but Girona is in second with 35 points; the only thing separating them is goal differential. In addition, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, both with 38 points in fourth place, are still in third and fourth place, respectively.

Serie A: With 45 points, Inter remains atop the standings, followed by Juventus in second place with 43 points. Moreover, Bologna is in fifth place with 31 points, ahead of Fiorentina with 33 and Milan in third place with 36. Since then, Roma is now in seventh place, and Napoli is in eighth.

BundesLiga: After a winter break, the Bundesliga will resume play in January 2024. Leverkusen now holds the top spot with 42 points, followed by Bayern in second place with 38 points. Dortmund has 27 points in the fifth position, then RB Leipzig with 33 points in the fourth and VfB Stuttgart with 34 points in the third.

UEFA Champions League: The next round commences in February 2024.

Proteas v India

The Proteas lead with 1 of 2 tests against India. The first test was epic and saw David Bedingham score a fifty on debut. Dean Elgar also reached a century and played an amazing game of cricket. Nandre Burger picked up his maiden Test wicket when he dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal. The 2nd test is from 3 – 7 January 2024. And then in February the team is off on their New Zealand tour.

Dakar Rally 2024

The 2024 Dakar Rally starts on 6 January from Alula to Al Henakiyah and is in Saudi Arabia. It is one of the 1st Dakar’s that don’t start on 1 January. The finish will be on 19 January in Yanbu. There are 12 stages and a rest after stage 6 in Riyadh.

There are 6 South African bike riders and 7 South African Car riders competing this year. from Giniel de Villiers, Denis Murphy to Bradley Cox and Charan Moore.

AFCON 2024

Originally slated to take place in June and July of 2023, the AFCON 2023 has been rescheduled to begin in January of 2024. Without a doubt, the event will be a fantastic way to kick off 2024. Bafana Bafana are in Group E with Tunisia, Mali and Namibie.

The key dates of the AFCON tournament in January are as follows:

• Group Stage: 13-24 January 2024
• Round of 16: 27-30 January 2024

HSBC 7’s

The Blitzbokke won the Dubai 7’s again this year and what a show they put on! However they could not hold onto the same victory in Cape Town. But there is still plenty to play for! The second season for the Betway SA20 is about to start! There is some controversy surrounding the league however so far it has been so successful and the locals love it! Australian Open 2024

On Sunday, January 14, the first Grand Slam of the new season gets underway! A thrilling start for Sports News 2024 in January.

The defending singles champions are Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka, while other players aiming for their maiden Melbourne title are Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff. Along with American players Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton, we will witness the likes of Naomi Osaka, Emma Raducanu, Rafael Nadal, and Angelique Kerber competing.

WSB Cape Town Met 2024

Winter X-Games 2024

The Winter X-Games in Aspen are set for 26-28 January 2024. The tournament will run from 26 January 2024 -28 January 2024. Almost a hundred of the best winter athletes in the world will compete against each other. They will be participating in the largest snow sport competition of the year. Three days of intense competition featuring the top action sport athletes competing in 14 different disciplines – including slopestyle, big air, knuckle hucking, and superpipe for skiers and snowboarder. It will leave spectators breathless. Thus, you shouldn’t miss these games!
