Proteas make History with WTC Victory!

23 June 2025 |

For decades, the Protea cricket team has carried the weight of expectation on their shoulders. With generations of world-class talent such as Allan Donald, Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, and many more. South Africa has long been considered a sleeping giant in international cricket. Despite consistently ranking among the top Test nations, the ultimate ICC trophy had always eluded them. That is, until now.

In a landmark moment that has sent shockwaves of joy through the cricketing world, the Protea cricket team has finally captured the ICC World Test Champions. Under the dynamic leadership of Aiden Markram, they clinched the elusive ICC Championship Trophy in a dramatic final, overcoming India at Lord’s. The Protea WTC victory is not just a win. It is a triumphant breakthrough, a culmination of persistence, resilience, and unwavering belief.

Seizing the Moment: Proteas’ WTC Final Path

The ICC World Test Championship final between South Africa and India was nothing short of a spectacle. After two years of intense Test battles, South Africa booked their place at the top of the world test championship table thanks to stellar series wins against England, West Indies, and a key away victory in New Zealand.

The grand final at Lord’s saw the Proteas batting first and posting a solid 317 in their first innings, thanks to a gritty century by Keegan Petersen and valuable contributions from David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne. Marco Jansen’s late-order fireworks further boosted the total.

India responded with 245, but it was Kagiso Rabada’s fiery spell that tilted the game. His 5-wicket haul was backed by disciplined bowling from Keshav Maharaj and Lungi Ngidi. In the second innings, Markram once again led from the front with a captain’s knock of 82, setting India a challenging 294-run target. Rabada and Maharaj then returned to dismantle India’s batting order, sealing the ICC World Test Championship win by 137 runs.

The Proteas’ Journey

This historic WTC victory didn’t come overnight. South Africa has endured multiple heartbreaks over the years in ICC tournaments. From the infamous 1999 World Cup semi-final tie to the 2015 heartbreak against New Zealand, and consistent near-misses in Test and ODI formats, the scars are deep.

The Protea cricket team has been accused of “choking” on the big stage. A tag that haunted even their greatest sides. But this current generation, under Aiden Markram, has rewritten the script. Despite off-field instability, coaching changes, and criticism over transformation selections, the Proteas have stayed the course. Their unity and trust in a long-term Test strategy finally paid off.

WTC History and Fun Facts

The ICC World Test Championship was introduced in 2019. Therefore bringing more context and competitiveness to bilateral Test series. Instead of standalone series, teams now compete over two-year cycles to qualify for a final.

Previous WTC winners:

  • 2019–2021: New Zealand defeated India at the Rose Bowl, Southampton.
  • 2021–2023: Australia defeated India at The Oval, London.

With this ICC World Test Championship final win, South Africa becomes the third nation to lift the prestigious ICC trophy, marking a new era for Protea cricket.

Fun facts:

  • Lord’s, the home of cricket, has now hosted two WTC Finals.
  • Rabada’s 10-wicket match haul was the best ever for a South African bowler in a Test final.
  • Also the first ICC final won by South Africa since the ICC Champions Trophy 1998.

Zimbabwe Tour and Rising Stars

Fresh from their ICC World Test Championship win, the Protea cricket team is gearing up for their next assignment: a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe. This historic tour marks the first time in over two decades that South Africa will play a full Test series on Zimbabwean soil, reigniting a regional rivalry filled with history and pride.

Fixtures:

  • 1st Test: 28 June 2025 – 1 July, Queens Sports Club
  • 2nd Test: 6 July 2025 – 10 July, Queens Sports Club
  • T20: 14 July 2025 – Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo
  • T20: 20 July 2025 – Harare Sports Club, Harare

With Aiden Markram resting and Temba Bavuma still sidelined due to injury, Keshav Maharaj steps in as captain. The squad also welcomes several fresh faces, including the much-anticipated debut of Dewald Brevis. Known for his explosive style in white-ball cricket, Brevis now gets his chance to shine in the Test arena.

Young fast bowler Mihlali Mpongwana and all-rounder Ruan de Swardt have also been called up. Thus adding new energy to a squad already brimming with confidence after their WTC triumph. With a strong blend of experience and youth, the Proteas will aim to build momentum early in the new World Test Championship cycle.
