New Regulations For The 2026 Formula 1 Season
The FIA and other governing bodies within the Formula 1 have introduced a whole new set of rules and regulations. A lot of thought has gone into making the cars safer and lighter. The new cars will look a little bit different this year. Seasoned Formula 1 viewers will notice that the car is a little bit shorter and narrower. This is due to the shortening of the wheelbase thus making the cars more responsive.
Another change is that the floor of the car has been changed. The floors will now be flatter with a few more openings. Thus giving teams the chance to try much more setups to suit the driver’s driving style.
Active Aero
Active Aero is a major change on the wings. The “Active Aero” function gives drivers a change to the angle of both their front and rear wings. How it works is simple. Closed flaps create better grip on corners and open flaps reduces drag and gives the car more on the straights. The Active Aero is very much the same as the old DRS system. The only difference is that teams can use it on every lap compared to when the driver is within one second of the car in front.
Overtake Mode
Drivers now have an added extra called “Overtake Mode”. This can be used when the car is within in second from the car ahead. Overtake Mode gives the car more electrical power to overtake or to put pressure on other drivers. The “Boost” button at any time of the race provided they have enough charge in the batteries. The charge for the Boost comes from either braking in addition to engine energy.
The Race Cars of 2026
The engine has been changed significantly however the V6 1.6 Litre Hybrid engine will still be used. It has now been divided into a 50/50 split of half combustion and half electric motor. Driver safety has been at the forefront. Officials have strengthened the roll hoop that protects drivers by approximately 23% this year.
One of the ideals of Formula 1 is be carbon neutral. The 2026 season will mark the first year teams use advanced sustainable fuels. Officials have already tested these fuels in Formula 2 and Formula 3.
