Name Change
The race’s name has changed numerous times over the years. As soon as it began in 1897, it was referred to as the Durban Winter Handicap. It changed its name to the Durban July Handicap in 1928, but from 1943 to 1945, it went back to its previous name. When the race was reinstituted in 1946 under the name Durban July Handicap, it remained thus until Rothmans began to sponsor it. The country’s new tobacco regulations outlawed it, and while Rothmans resisted, the longest-running race in history had to end its longest running sponsorship of a major sport event. So after 38 years this relationship ended in 2000.
The event was contested under the simple name “Durban July” in 2001, Vodacom made a significant announcement about its partnership with Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event in 2002. In 2022, Hollywoodbets became the new headline sponsor.
Fun Facts about the Durban July
- The first July: This race was first run in 1897 and was contested over 1 mile (approx 1600m) for a stake of 500 sovereigns.
- Race Distance: In 1906 the distance changed to 1 mile 68 yards (approx 1670m). Then in 1913 to 1 mile 1 furlong (approx 1800m), in 1915 to 1/4 miles (approx 2000m) and remained so until 1940. Furthermore in 1941 the distance changed to 1 mile 2 1/4 furlongs (approx 2100m) and only in 1970 it changed to its current distance of 2200m.
- Age of the Winners: A two-year-old had one win only in 1911. The three-year-olds have 35 wins but 50% of the last 20 years. Then the four-year-olds have 48 wins but 50% of the last 20 years. Next up the five-year-olds have taken the honours 26 times. So the Six-year-olds have won 11 and the last six-year-old winner was in 1980. Lastly the seven-year-olds have won five times.
- Dead Heat: There have only been two winning dead heats in the history of this race. The first one took place in 1967 when Jollify and Sea Cottage could not be separated as they passed the post. And in 2008 the crowd saw favourites locked together in a driving finish for glory. History shows that the mighty Pocket Power and the exceptional filly Dancer’s Daughter crossed the finishing line together as one.
