2022/2023 English Premier League

4 August 2022 |

The 2022/2022 season is upon us. The wait for football fans is over- the greatest league in the world, the English Premier League (EPL) kicks off on Friday the 5th of August.

The question on everyone’s minds is whether this will again be a 2-horse race between Manchester City and Liverpool? Sharing the spoils over the past 5 seasons, these 2 teams have been in a class of their own in recent history. Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur traditionally round out the top half of the table. These teams however all have their eye on the top spot of the log. Winning the league is a prestigious achievement, and one that players from all camps strive for. Man City are aiming for 3 in a row- everyone else would love to spoil the party. One thing for certain is that we are in for another 2022/2023 English Premier League filled with drama and excitement. For a recap of last season look at our English Premier League 2021/2022 article.

Recent years

Man United, the most successful team in EPL history with 13 wins have not taken the title since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013. The form team of the past 10 years is undoubtably Man City. Winning their first title in the 2011/2012 season, City have won a further 5 times in the period since. This places them second on the list of all time victories, with 6. Chelsea, Liverpool, and Leicester City are the only other clubs to have won the league in the period since 2010. Apart from Tottenham, who have never won a title, Arsenal are the team who have gone the longest without a win. Last winning the league in the 2003/2004 season, the Gunners have only managed inconsistent forays into the top 4 in recent years.

The big six and their chances

For many years the EPL was the story of the big four and how they would compete for supremacy each year. Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have always been considered the 4 clubs with the largest fan bases. In recent years, Tottenham and Man City have entered the fray. Each season the spotlight is on these 6 clubs and how they perform not only against each other, but across the league.

Man United

The club with both the most Premier League titles to their name and the largest fanbase, Man United enter each edition of the league with high expectations. While the heyday of Ferguson’s reign is over, the club cannot be faulted for trying to find a suitable successor. Since Ferguson’s exit, the list of hopeful managers who have come and gone is extensive. The club starts the 2022/2023 English Premier League with yet another new coach in Erik Ten Hag. The former Ajax head coach must figure out the Ronaldo situation if he wishes to get this most famous club back on track.

Man City

The clear form team of the past 5 years, City head into this new season as favourites once again. Pep Guardiola has cultivated this team into a winning machine. The only accolade missing is a UEFA Champions League title. The Citizens will look to build good momentum early in the EPL season once again, as this puts them on the front foot for all other competitions that take place during the season. Looking for 3 titles in a row, few would bet against City achieving this feat.

Chelsea

The blues last won the EPL title back in the 2016/2017 season under Antonio Conte. They have however had more recent success in the UEFA Champions League- winning the title in the 2020/2021 season. By beating Man City in the final, coach Thomas Tuchel knows that his side can compete with the best on their day. Once they improve their consistency, they will have a good chance to compete for the top spot.

Liverpool

The other form team over the past few years is Liverpool. Winning the UEFA Champions League in the 2018/2019 season, along with the EPL title in 2019/2020 marked a return to the glory days for Jurgen Klopp and his charges. Add 2 runner’s-up spots over the past 5 seasons to the mix. It is clear to see that perhaps Liverpool is the team closest to challenging Man City in the title race. They head into this season as joint favourites.

Arsenal

The gunners have had limited success in recent years. A few FA Cup victories and an EPL runner’s up spot in the 2015/2016 season is the sum of their achievements over the past decade. The successful team’s that Arsene’ Wenger cultivated are a thing of the past unfortunately. Former captain and current manager Mikel Arteta has quietly been piecing together a team that he feels can challenge in the league. Can they dream of the success of the ‘Invincibles’? Perhaps too early to tell, but one thing for certain is that the Arsenal fans have long since waited for a team they can be positive about- hopefully this is the season for them.

Tottenham Hotspur

Never having won an EPL title weighs heavily on the London club. They are always considered a threat, but never seem to manage going all the way. The closest the team has come to lifting the trophy in recent years was in the 2016/2017 season when they were beaten to the post by Chelsea. UEFA Champions League runners-up in 2018/2019, the club clearly can produce great results. However, getting the hoodoo off their back may prove to be the club’s greatest challenge. Perhaps this season is the time they do it… Time will tell.
