HSBC 7’s 2024
With Olympic gold and the HSBC SVNS 2024 up for grabs, 2024 looks to be an exciting year for the shorter format. In early December 2023, the HSBC SVNS 2024 got underway with great excitement as the men and women of South Africa and Australia maintained their domination in the desert.
So let us have a detailed look at the HSBC 7’s for 2024, the revised look for this year and the teams competing in the Paris Olympics.
Revised Look
In contrast to past years, the overall men’s and women’s champions won’t be revealed until June. This will be at the conclusion of the competition in Madrid.
The best eight teams in both the men’s and women’s rankings after seven rounds will be divided into two groups. They will consist of four teams as part of the redesigned competition. The winners will square off in a grand final at the famed Civitas Metropolitano Stadium for the title of overall season winner.
As the top four teams from the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series 2024 compete in a different eight-team competition. The teams ranked ninth through twelfth in the rankings will fight to save their SVNS status.
Through the events, which comprise a group stage and a round of play-off matches, four men’s and four women’s teams will confirm their spots in the SVNS 2025.
Twelve men’s and twelve women’s teams will take the starting line in Dubai on January 12 in the competition to earn a trip to Madrid via the Challenger Series. The second round will then take place in Montevideo, Uruguay in March. With the women’s Challenger Series 2024 concluding in Poland and the men’s in Germany.

Paris Olympics
Of course HSBC 7s is not the only attraction in town in 2024. The majority of the 24 teams vying for the title will also be aiming for glory in July at the Olympic Games in Paris. Through series and regional qualification, eleven of the twelve teams competing in the men’s and women’s tournaments have already been determined.
On the Stade de France surface, there is still room for one men’s and one women’s squad. Their identities will be determined in Monaco from June 21 to June 23. At the World Rugby Sevens Repechage, South Africa, the Rio 2016 bronze medalists and Emirates Dubai 7s champions, will lead a formidable 12-team men’s group. This also features SVNS rivals Canada, Great Britain and Spain.
Men’s and Women’s SVNS Olympic Dream
China and Kenya both had prior Olympic experience in the women’s repechage. While Czechia qualified in their first year of international sevens competition by defeating SVNS side Spain.
The competitions at Stade de France, the site of two Men’s Rugby World Cup finals, promise to be another exciting showcase for the reduced format. Regardless of whether sides win those coveted final tickets to Paris 2024. Given their track record of reliability on the series, the hosts will be confident in their chances of taking home medals in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
Antoine Dupont’s decision to dedicate himself to the campaign starting in February has also increased French hopes of a men’s medal. Also test centurion Michael Hooper is bidding to win a spot in the Australian squad.
Australia, who won women’s gold in Rio 2016, is off to a great start this season. They defeated the Black Ferns, the defending Olympic champions, in 41 match winning run to take the Dubai title. And then held off a French comeback in the Cape Town final in the HSBC 7s 2024. Try-machine, with her incredible 2022 season, Maddison Levi has continued to build on her success. She also hopes to lead her nation to a second Olympic gold medal.
