Odds are based on 2 factors:
- The chance (probability) of the outcome (based on historical data).
- The margin
The first of which, probability, is easy to explain. Let’s use a cricket match between South Africa and England as an example.
South Africa – 50%
England – 30%
Draw – 20%
Total Probability – 100%
As you can see, there are 3 possible outcomes which are the odds the bookie will offer.
Then comes the margin the bookie adds, or profit. Bookies usually operate on a set margin. This could be by sport type, overall, as an operator or whatever they feel brings them the most profit.
Determining the Value of a Bet
As a punter you need to certainly look at the value of each bet. Therefore, after having done your research, you should calculate if there is any value for you in placing the bet.
But how do we calculate the bet value? It is a very simple calculation:
Value = (Decimal Odds x Your Assessed Probability) – 1
Let’s use an example where we are betting on South Africa to beat England. The bookie is offering us odds of 3.00 for South Africa to win. We feel that looking at South Africa’s current form and historical data there is a 60% chance South Africa could win this match.
However, are these odds of any value to us? Let’s see by calculating the value of above example:
Value = (3.00 x 0.60) – 1 = 0.8
Where the value is greater than 0, it is known as a ‘value bet’. So, given the odds of 3.00 and our assessed probability of 60%, there is 80% value in the odds on offer of 3.00 for South Africa to win the match.
As such, be sure to look at the value in the bets you want to place, but no matter how much you stand to make, always remember to set yourself a betting budget and don’t bet beyond your limit. Gamble responsibly.
