Banyana Banyana through to WAFCON quarter finals
Morocco plays centre stage once again as they host the 2025 WAFCON. 12 woman’s team from countries all around descended to Morocco to compete in the Championship. The WAFCON is the biggest woman’s football competition in Africa. The competition was started back in 1998 when only eight teams from around Africa were able to participate.
The event has grown with more teams allowed to enter, 12 teams now take part in the competition. More spectators attend the matches as well as more viewers watching from home. The prize money for the winners of the competition has also increased to million US dollars this year. The country that finished second will walk away with 500 000 thousand dollars. Therefore let us have a closer look at the next stage of WAFCON 2025.
WAFCON Group Stage Fixtures
The first kickoff of WAFCON 2025 was on the 5th of July. This was a Group A match, that ended in a draw between Morocco and Zambia. The organisers placed the countries into three groups, each made up of four teams. South Africa’s Banyana Banyana landed in Group C alongside Ghana, Mali, as well as Tanzania. Group A is, Morocco, Zambia, Senegal and Congo. The countries in Group B are made up of heavy weights Nigeria, Algeria, Botswana as well as Tunisia.
Which country is in for a win?
South Afica’s Banyana Banyana is the current title holders. They lifted the trophy for the first time in 2022 and have consistently improved their capabilities making them a force in the competition. Nigeria is also the country with the most title wins under the belt. The Super Falcons, as they’re commonly known, have lifted the trophy an astonishing nine times and pose the biggest threat Mzansi’s women will need to watch out for.
Host nation Morocco is another contender this year. Their Coach Jorge Vilda is aiming the keep the trophy on Moroccan soil. Ghana has also shown what they can do with an explosive finish against Tanzania in their first group stage encounter. Winning the match 4-1 after the final whistle.
Banyana’s Road Through the Group Stages
South African’s can look forward to more action from our woman’s team as they face Senegal on the 19th of July. It’s been one heck of a road through the group stage of the tournament for our woman’s national team. The team went throttle from the opening match where they played Mali. The match also ended in a high score for SA with four points on the board and zero for Mali.
Their next encounter was against Tanzania. Tanzania has been mentioned by pundits and seen as one of the underdogs. They game had some exciting moments but ultimately ended in a draw at one each. Banyana’s last match was against Ghana. Our ladies dominated the Black Queens who were unable to reproduce their first performance losing the match 2-0.
Quarter Final Fixtures
This weekend will see how the quarter finals play out in WAFCON 2025. Friday the 18th of July will see two quarter finals matches.
- The first quarter match is between Nigeria Zambia at 18:00.
- The second quarter final is between Morocco and Mali at 21:00.
Saturday the 19th quarter final matches:
- Algeria vs Ghana is on at 18:00.
The match that is on everyone’s lips is the last of the quarter final matches. The match that every soccer supporter will be watch is between Banyana Banyana and Senegal and with kickoff at 21:00.
The winners from the quarter finals will advance to the semis which is taking place on the 22nd of July. The iconic Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca will host the final match on 26 July, with kickoff set for 21:00.
Final Thoughts
It is hard to decide which counties will be end up in the final with so many good teams still in the running.
