The 2026 US Open

16 June 2026 |

This June, the sleepy town of Southampton in the Hamptons will transform into the focal point of golf as the town welcomes thousands of golf fans to the 2026 US Open.

This year sees the 126th edition of the US Open take place at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, a links-inspired course and one of the toughest in North America. This will subsequently be the sixth time the tournament plays at the course. The event will host 156 players over the period of the 18th to the 21st of June.

Shinnecock Hills Golf Club

Shinnecock is one of the jewels of America’s golf courses and a member of the founding five clubs of the USGA. The club is known for its beauty, and many have described it as one of the “fairest yet most demanding championship venues in golf.” Established in 1891, the Shinnecock Hills Golf Course tests golfers’ capabilities in shot making, critical thinking and precision. The US Open 2026 could bring even more attention to this legendary club.

The course is equally known for its fast greens and for strong winds coming from the Atlantic Ocean. South African Retief Goosen claimed the US Open title at the course in 2004.

The Holes at Shinnecock

The Shinnecock course features some of golf’s most well-known and respected holes. Hole 11 is perhaps one of the toughest holes in championship golf, depending on who you ask. This par 3, known as Hill Head, plays directly into the winds from the Atlantic and in addition features deep bunkers with elevated greens. As a result, most golfers are very happy to walk away with a par.

Hole 7 is a par 3 where wind can play a major role. Players need to choose their club wisely, as the hole is deceptively short.

The heavily protected green of hole 14 makes this long par 4 difficult for just about any golfer. Looking to the future, The US Open 2026 might see even tougher conditions on these iconic holes.

Finally, hole 18 named “Home” is one of golf’s best finishing holes. Thanks to the large Amphitheatre setting around the last green, this par 4 has the potential to produce plenty of drama on Sunday afternoon.

Golf’s Longest Day

Golf’s Longest Day is a unique way for any golfer with a low enough handicap to gain entry into the US Open. A approximately 600 golfers participate in the tournament. It is played in one day and spread over 10 different courses. The US Golf Open can allocate up to 60 entries this way. The day earns its name because players tackle 36 holes in one day.

Those who perform well in the first 18 holes qualify for the second round. The players will thereby play immediately after the morning session. Consequently, some players can compete for up to 12 hours continuously without a break, and most carry their own bag. People call amateurs who qualify this way “Monday Qualifiers” because they compete against professionals a week later. The US Open 2026 is expected to showcase even more up-and-coming golfers through this qualifying process.

Favourites to win the US Open

Many of our partnered sportsbooks, such as World Sports Betting and Hollywoodbets, offer odds on the tournament. The unpredictability that Shinnecock Hills produces makes it hard to predict a winner. But pundits are currently favouring a few players. World number one Scottie Scheffler leads the list of players poised to do well this year. He is followed by Rory McIlroy, who claimed the Green Jacket for a second consecutive time this year. A feat not many players can match, and one that places him among the legends.

Meanwhile, 2024 champion Bryson DeChambeau returns to the course to compete again this year. Bryson thrives in the tough conditions that Shinnecock provides. Our hope is to see any of the South Africans including Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Garrick Higgo and Wilco Nienaber make it to the final day. Undoubtedly, The US Open 2026 will also bring new favorites to watch as the field continues to evolve.
