The Augusta National Golf Club is preparing the greens to welcome golfers and golfing fans for the annual US Masters. 2025 will be the 89st edition of the Masters which will feature 80 players in this year’s tournament.

The US Masters is drenched in tradition with many different traditions taking place before and during the tournament. The US Masters is also the start of the Majors that include The Masters, British Open, The US Open and the PGA Championship. The tee off of this prestigious tournament will be on the 10^th of April and takes place over three days. The Masters is a Par 72 golf course which finishes at one the most well known 18^th holes in the world called Holly. Holly is a Par 4, 465 yards hole which has had some of the most dramatic finishes in golf. One of the most notable recent finishes at Holly was in 2019 by Tiger Woods.

Invitation to play at the Masters

The pristine golf course is not the only thing that sets the US Masters apart from most other golf tournaments. Players need to get an invitation to play the tournament. The players that ended in the top 50 last year get an invite to play as do the 50 players that are in the top 50 during the week before tee off at Augusta. Players that have won major tournaments as well as selected PGA events are also extended an invitation. The LIV Golf League has however thrown a spanner in the works and has affected the eligibility of players for this year’s tournament. This year will field a smaller amount of players than previous years.

US Masters’ viewership and patron attendance

There are always a few rules to follow when attending the golf tournament as a patron. Patrons may wear jeans, but organizers do not recommend them. Officials strictly forbid the use of mobile devices. Attendance numbers remain uncertain, but an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 patrons attend over three days. The Masters along with the Open are the two most watched golfing tournaments on the calendar. Last year attracted 15 million golfing enthusiasts from all corners of the globe to tune in and watch the US Master Golf. Fun fact is broadcasters air only four hours of the event each day to maintain its exclusivity and mystique.

Who will wear the Green Jacket?

Green Jacket holder and current world number Scottie Scheffler is the favourite coming into the Masters. The American won the 2024 easily with a margin of four strokes finishing 11 under Par. Scottie comes in at 4.5 despite recovering from a hand injury.

Swedish golfer and rising star Ludvig Åberg is making a name for himself. The 25-year-old secured second place in last year’s tournament and currently holds the 5th spot in the world rankings. He could make for a strong bet with 15/1.

Previous number one holder and current number two in the world; North Irishman Rory McIlroy is a favourite of the bookies to put on the Green Jacket this year. He came second behind Scottie in 2022. The bookies have him down at 9/2 to win.

Joh Rahm who stunned the golfing world in 2023 after announcing that he would join LIV Golf will also competing. The Spaniard won in 2023 winning with 12 under Par winning him the Green Jacket. He comes in at 15/1.

Gold medallist as well as current Open Championship holder Xander Schauffele is an outsider. The bookies currently have him at 18 to one.
