The Origin of T20 Cricket
T20 cricket began in 2003 when the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) introduced it. They aimed to counter declining audiences, fewer sponsorship deals, and also a lack of interest from younger fans. Cricket needed a fresh approach, and T20 provided just that!
The initial T20 games, especially the final at Trent Bridge, attracted record crowds and were a big success. So from 2003 onwards, T20 cricket quickly spread across domestic leagues in all cricketing nations. Furthermore by 2005, it had gone international, with Australia winning the first match against New Zealand.
