The 2024 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon prepares to make a major impact, showcasing Africa’s top marathon event once again. As a contender for the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors, it brings more than just a challenge. It shines a spotlight on Cape Town’s stunning scenery, Africa’s legendary runners, and the diverse cultures shaping the continent.
When and Where
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon gets set to run on 19 October 2024, starting and finishing at the same place. The start has been moved to Fritz Sonnenberg Road in Green Point. Runners will race through vibrant neighborhoods like Woodstock and Newlands. They navigate Liesbeek Parkway and Zonnebloem, while enjoying breathtaking views along Beach Road. Then returning to the lively finish line at Helen Suzman Boulevard.
Sanlam Marathon Route
The marathon route has changed only slightly this year, running through a garden with ample shade that will be welcomed on this event. Runner will start in Fritz Sonnenberg Road and head out towards Granger Bay. They will make their way to the N1/N2 outbound lane on the elevated freeway towards the N2. At 14.2Km runner will make their way past Claremont Blvd and Mill, at 17.5Km they will pass Michael’s Restaurant and Rondebosch park. Now onto Rondebosch Common for the halfway mark. The next section is straight and fast from Albert Road, Newmarket Street and Salt River. Into the 29.9km stretch they head onto Darling Street and ast the Castle of Good Hope and the iconic City Hall.
The 30.7Km mark takes them past Government Avenue onto Orange and Long Street. Here they will run through the beautiful company gardens which is a new addition to the route. At the 34.2Km mark runners will hit the Green Point Main Road which is super flat and takes you to Beach Road – the Sea Point ‘Loop of Death’. This is the final push heading to the 42Km finish line in Vlei Road, Green Point.

A Brief History
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon began in 2007 and has transformed into one of Africa’s premier marathon events. Initially, the marathon attracted a small group of runners. However over the years, it has significantly expanded, now welcoming a diverse range of participants. Diverse crowd from elite athletes to casual runners and wheelchair competitors.
This marathon stands out for its stunning course, which highlights the beauty of Cape Town. Also in 2020, the event achieved the prestigious World Athletics Gold Label Status, making it the only marathon in Africa to receive this honor.
