It’s chip and putt at the Ryder Cup
It’s that time of the year again. When all of the major golf tournaments have come to end and the US and Europeans tee off to see who is better at Golf in the Ryder Cup. This year’s Ryder Cup takes place at Bethpage Black Course just outside New York. It is the first time the club will hosting the tournament.
Oak Hill Country Club being the only other New York area course to host the event. The Ryder Cup has been a golfing mainstay for nearly a century, debuting in 1927 at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts. The first couple of tournaments only saw players from England and Ireland compete against the US. That changed in 1979 when players from European countries were also able to play.
What sets the Ryder Cup apart from others?
There are two distinct differences between the Ryder Cup and other golf tournaments. The Ryder Cup’s format sets it apart from other golf tournaments. The Ryder Cup uses Match Play rather than the usual Stroke Play, transforming how the game is played. The format allows players the chance to play riskier golf than they would usually play and makes for great viewing. The reason is that each hole can be seen as a small individual competition in Match Play. Meaning that winning the hole is a point on the board, no matter how shots where played to win the game.
Team USA vs team Europe
The second played difference is that teams play together and have a Captain. A team consists of 12 players. Six of out of those players will gain automatic entry in the competition based on performance over a period. The other six players are known as the Captain’s picks and is chosen by the Captain.
The criteria on how players gain automatic entry are different for each team. Each team uses different criteria for automatic entry. Team Europe relies on a Ryder Cup points system, while team USA takes a more traditional approach. The select players based on performances in certain tournaments.
Keegan Bradley is Captain for team USA for the Ryder Cup. The following players are his picks for the team; Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Ben Griffin, Cameron Young, Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay. Players that gained automatic entry is Bryson DeChambeau, Russell Henley, Xander Schauffele, Harris English, J.J. Spaun and Scottie Scheffler.
Luke Donald is the captain of this year’s European team. The team has largely stayed the same as last year. With the inclusion of newcomer Rasmus Højgaard who gained automatic entry. Other automatic entry players are Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton. The captain’s pick players are Sepp Straka, Shane Lowry, Ludvig Åberg, Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick and Jon Rahm.
Past Ryder Cup Winners
The Ryder Cup takes place every two years, which adds to the excitement around the tournament. Europe is the current title holders and won the last tournament in 2023 at Marco Simone course in Italy. The cup has changed hands between teams in the last few tournaments
Team USA won the title in 2021 and Europe won the cup again in 2018. The 2025 Ryder Cup tees off on Friday the 26th of September and runs through the weekend, finishing on Sunday. There are a few different betting options available on the Ryder Cup. Some of the options include, top point scorer and betting on each individual hole. The pundits currently has team USA as the favourites to win but who will win is anyone’s guess. My guess is on a great game of golf and something else to watch besides rugby and football this weekend.
Who plays in the Ryder Cup?
Each Ryder Cup team fields 12 of the best players from either side of the Atlantic. Six players qualify automatically through a points system based on results from the PGA Tour or DP World Tour. The remaining six are handpicked as captain’s selections, giving each captain a chance to reward form, chemistry, or experience. This mix of automatic qualifiers and wildcard picks often sparks debate and excitement before the event tees off.

FAQ
The Ryder Cup is a men’s golf tournament where Europe and the USA compete in a team matchplay format. First held in 1927 between Great Britain and the USA, it also expanded to include Europe in 1979. Players face off in foursomes, fourballs, as well as singles, making every point vital.
The Ryder Cup consists of 28 matches in total. Over the first two days, teams play eight foursomes and eight fourballs, before 12 singles matches wrap up the final day. In foursomes, teammates alternate shots with the same ball until completing the hole, demanding teamwork and trust. In fourballs, every golfer plays their own ball, and the lowest score on each hole counts for the team. The unique blend of formats ensures strategy, skill, and pressure all collide across three intense days.
With 28 points on the line, every match matters. A team earns one point for a win and half a point if the match finishes tied. The first team to hit 14.5 points secures the Ryder Cup trophy. If the competition ends 14-14, the defending champions retain the title. This simple scoring system means that momentum swings can completely change the outcome, thus making the Ryder Cup one of golf’s most unpredictable events.
You qualify by signing up through this campaign and placing a bet of R100 or more on either Europe or the USA to win the Ryder Cup 2025 before the tournament begins. Every time your chosen team scores points, you build bonus bet value. At the end of the tournament, SuperSportBet rewards you with a mega bonus bet based on your team’s total points.
