Comrades Marathon 2025

5 June 2025 |

There are few events in the world that embody the grit, determination, and unity of the human spirit quite like the Comrades Marathon. Known globally as The Ultimate Human Race, this iconic Comrades Ultra Marathon is more than just a test of physical endurance. It’s a spiritual and emotional journey shared by thousands of runners and supporters alike.

Each year, the Comrades Marathon captures the imagination of South Africans and an ever-growing international community. In 2025, the 98th edition of this historic race will once again shine a spotlight on extraordinary athleticism and camaraderie.

Details on the Comrades Marathon 2025

Firstly, mark your calendars: Sunday, 8 June 2025 is Comrades Day! This year’s edition will be a Down Run, beginning at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 05h30. Finishing approximately 89km later at People’s Park in Durban. As the 49th Down Run, runners can expect a fast but punishing descent toward sea level. With quad-burning hills and emotional crowd support along the way.

The Comrades Marathon covers 89 kilometres, making it the ultimate ultra marathon test. In addition to the ultra, the Comrades Marathon Association has also embraced inclusivity and varying levels of ability by offering additional distances. Though the 89km ultra remains the centerpiece of the event. These supplementary distances help grow the event’s footprint and draw in new participants, but the prestige of completing the full ultra endures.

Men’s Field: A Battle of Champions and Rising Stars

This year’s men’s race promises fierce competition and thrilling rivalries. Piet Wiersma, dubbed the Flying Dutchman, will return to defend his title. Representing Nedbank International, Wiersma has proven he’s not just fast but he’s tactically brilliant over ultra distances.

Right behind him is Tete Dijana of Nedbank GN, the defending champion of the Down Run, who knows this route intimately and will undoubtedly be a major threat. Meanwhile, Joseph Manyedi from Maxed Elite CG and Edward Mothibi (also of Nedbank GN) are both seasoned contenders with the strength and savvy to make bold moves mid-race.

Another top name to watch is Teboho Sello from Maxed Elite Lesotho. A rising star who’s turned heads with his recent performances. Then there’s the consistent Bongmusa Mthembu from Arthur Ford, a multiple Comrades champion who brings invaluable experience. Alex Milne, Givemore Mudzinganyama, Johannes Makgetla, and Onalenna Khonkhobe round out a formidable men’s field with the potential to deliver a historic showdown.

Women’s Field: Spotlight on

In the women’s race, all eyes will be on Gerda Steyn, the reigning champion and national hero. Her dominant performances and trademark endurance make her a favorite not just to win, but to break records. Backed by SuperSport’s extensive coverage, Steyn’s run will captivate the nation.

Challengers like Dominika Stelmach, Alexandra Morozova, Jenna Challenor, and Landie Greyling (all representing Nedbank International) are expected to keep the pressure on. Their international experience and recent form suggest they could spring surprises if Steyn falters or the pace is punishing from the start.

Veteran runners such as Charne Bosman, a past Comrades winner, remain inspirations for many on race day. Meanwhile, a trio of Comrades legends, Hein Potgieter (30-time runner), Simphiwe Buthelezi (16-time runner), and Paula Small, who is chasing her 10th finish to earn her coveted Green Number. Showcase the heart of the Comrades ethos: resilience, tradition, and a lifelong passion for running.

What’s New in 2025?

The 2025 edition of the Comrades Marathon introduces several key changes. Firstly, there is a revamped pacesetter program. With handpicked pacers across various goal finish times to help runners manage their effort more strategically. This move is designed to encourage more runners to cross the finish line within the 12-hour cut-off.

Furthermore, the race continues to embrace its role as a global pilgrimage, drawing in runners from over 80 nations. There’s a renewed emphasis on storytelling, with broadcast partners like SuperSport diving deeper into the personal journeys of runners. Especially those from historically underrepresented regions and backgrounds.

Importantly, the marathon continues to honor its Green Number legends. Those who have completed the race ten or more times. Veterans like Joe Faber, Abraham Mahlangu, Ramokoka, Petrus Ndlovu, and Sagren Moodley will inspire newer participants with their enduring commitment.

Newer runners also aim to earn one of the official medals, such as the Robert Mtshali medal, which recognises sub-10-hour finishers. A worthy badge of honor for those chasing a personal best.

Another major shift is the deeper integration of coaching and mentorship via figures like Craig George. Whom has trained elite athletes such as Prodigal Khumalo and Nkosikhona Mhlakwana. This development signals a more holistic approach to athlete preparation and performance.

Finish Line Feels: More Than A Race – Isiko Mpilo

As the Comrades Marathon 2025 barrels down toward Durban’s coast, it does so under a slogan rich in meaning: “More Than A Race – Isiko Mpilo.” Translated, Isiko Mpilo means a way/culture of life, an apt expression for an event that transcends sport.

Race Director Rowyn Minnaar captures it best: “On this day, both runners and supporters are not just united in a road-running event but stand together in camaraderie and goodwill. The Comrades Marathon is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and perseverance.”

Whether you’re chasing a gold medal, a Green Number, or your very first finish, the 2025 Comrades will deliver everything its legacy promises. A challenge like no other, and a reward that lasts a lifetime. For many athletes, the Comrades Run is more than just a race, it’s a lifelong achievement. So lace up, dig deep, and join the thousands who know: the Comrades Ultra Marathon is More Than A Race – Isiko Mpilo.

Other major sports events to keep any eye on this month will be the Roland Garros as well as the URC semi finals and finals. We also have the very anticipated Hollywoodbets Durban July galloping our way in July.

Hollywoodbets is always involved in some form or another when it comes to these local sports events. Their vibrant Purple Team will once again hit the roads for this epic challenge, proudly participating in one of the most exhilarating editions of the world’s most famous ultramarathons. Their presence adds to the festive atmosphere and reinforces their commitment to South African sport.
