9 October 2025 |

Cape Town is gearing up to get ready for the annual Cape Town Marathon. The excitement around this year’s race is palpable and is sure to be thrilling with the tickets already sold out. The marathon has been a staple for runners from around the world since its inception in 2007.

The race has become one of Mzansi’s premier city marathons and recently also earned recognition from the IAAF. The 2025 Cape Town Marathon is vying for membership in the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Therefore this year’s race is under evaluation for inclusion in 2026. The route takes runners on a 42km scenic tour which winds through the suburbs of Cape Town.

Fun Runs Before the Cape Town Marathon

There are a few smaller runs that take place before the main event. These runs cater to casual runners, families, and friends, taking place on Saturday the 18th, the day before the main race on Sunday. Nearly all entries for the fun runs have sold out, showcasing the community’s strong involvement in the event. The Peace runs consist of a 5km and 10km run road races. The 5 km family event welcomes children as young as 9 and is untimed. The 10km is timed and open to runners aged 14 and older, catering to those preparing for marathons.

Three races make up the Trail running events that form part of the event. These trails wind their way through the Table Mountain National park as well as surrounding natural terrain. All three races takes place on the Saturday the 18th and have varying degrees of difficulty. The trail distances are 11km, 22km and 43km. The 22km race is a UTMB-Index race that forms part of the UTMB qualification.

The Wheelchair Invitational

The Cape Town Marathon is all about inclusivity and has added the Wheelchair Invitational since 2023. The Wheelchair Elite as it also known gives wheelchair racers the chance to do the whole marathon. Organisers might slightly alter certain parts of the route for smoother surfaces and to make downhills easier to navigate. The wheelchair race takes place on the same day as the main event. The race starts a bit earlier to reduce congestion.  The winner of the men’s and woman’s Wheelchair Invitational gets R50 000 in prize money.

Cape Town Marathon 2025

24 000 Cape Town Marathon runners will start on Fritz Sonnenberg Road on Sunday the 19th of October. The starting pistol for the race will go off at 06:00. The route starts close to the waterfront and moves onto the Nelson Mandela Boulevard moving up towards Woodstock. It then runs through Newlands and Claremont where the route turns back to Rondebosch going towards Observatory. The route takes runners through Observatory where it heads for the city through Salt River. The circuit then goes through the city and makes its way through Green Point towards Sea Point. From there the runners will see the Atlantic at the promenade which makes it down to the finish line.

The prize money of R250 000 for the winners of men and woman. Which is enough to attract some of the best racers in the world. Anyone who breaks the previous record can earn an extra R100 000.
