Bafana Bafana at the FIFA World Cup 2026
Football fans around the world are rejoicing after the four year long wait for the next FIFA Football World Cup is finally over. The kick off to the world’s most watched tournament is now around the corner, with the first match taking place on the 11th of June.
The upcoming football world cup will be hosted by Canada, US and Mexico, a first for the tournament. Notably, the event also has the largest number of teams to ever compete, with 45 countries making their way to North America. Therefore let us have a closer look at Bafana Bafana World Cup 2026 journey thus far.
How Did Bafana Bafana Qualify for the World Cup?
It has been an emotional few years for South African football fans that have been waiting to see their team competing against the rest of the world. The last time the country saw Bafana competing in the event was in 2010 when it was hosted in Mzansi.
Getting to the 2026 FIFA World Cup was no easy feat for South Africa’s national football team. Bafana Bafana has been under the helm of Coach Hugo Broos since 2021. He has been instrumental in the team’s success. The Belgian has achieved very much in his stint as head Coach, which will be ending after the tournament. Along the way, Hugo achieved a Bronze in the 2023 AFCON and led the team to qualify for the upcoming tournament.
Bafana was drawn in Group C in the World Cup Qualifiers. Group C consisted of 6 teams including Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Benin, Lesotho and Rwanda. Each team played a total of 10 matches during the course of 2025, with the team who finished at the top qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Our boys did well during the qualifiers, however it came down to the last match to see which team would advance. South Africa played against Rwanda in their last match and needed to win the match and hope that Nigeria would beat Benin in order to qualify. Ultimately, Nigeria beat Benin and Bafana overcame Rwanda to book their second Football World Cup appearance.
