Now called the Betway Premiership, following the early end of DSTV’s sponsorship, the season kicks off on September 14, 2024, and wraps up in May 2025. Mamelodi Sundowns, who have dominated by winning seven titles in a row since 2017-18, are back to defend their crown.

The upcoming matches in the South African Premiership are set to kick off with some serious heat. First up on September 14, Royal AM hosts Cape Town City FC at 15:00 at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, promising an exciting opener. SA Premier League History

The South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) kicked off in 1996, shaking up the country’s football scene. Born from the merger of two big leagues, the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and the National Soccer League (NSL), it completely changed the game. This move brought in a more professional setup, smarter financial management, and some seriously lucrative sponsorships, making the competition even more intense.

Running from September to May, 16 teams go head-to-head in a round-robin format. The goal? To finish at the top of the points table and claim the national championship. Heavyweights like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the league for years. Sundowns, in particular, made waves by winning the CAF Champions League in 2016, solidifying their spot as one of Africa’s top teams.

But the PSL isn’t just about the league title. It also spices things up with knockout tournaments like the MTN 8, Telkom Knockout, and the Nedbank Cup. These competitions add extra drama by pitting top-tier teams against hungry lower-league challengers, making every match unpredictable.

The league also connects closely with the National First Division (NFD) through promotion and relegation. If a team finishes at the bottom of the PSL, they’re sent packing to the NFD, while top NFD teams fight their way into the PSL. This constant battle keeps things exciting and gives smaller clubs a chance to rise to the big leagues.

The PSL’s launch wasn’t just about football, it played a massive part in uniting South Africa after apartheid, becoming a cornerstone of national culture as well as a powerhouse in African football.

PSL Fun facts

  1. Young Talent Shines Bright: Mkhanyiseli Siwahla turned heads in 2004 when he stepped onto the PSL stage at just 15 years and 5 months old. To top it off, he scored in that very match, becoming the youngest goalscorer in PSL history. Talk about making an entrance!
  2. Sundowns Cash In: Mamelodi Sundowns had a payday to remember in the 2020/2021 season, raking in a cool R40 million in prize money. With the PSL’s prize pool growing year by year, it’s now also one of the richest football leagues on the African continent.
  3. Big Sponsors, Big Growth: The PSL has always had a knack for attracting major sponsors. Starting with ABSA, DStv and now Betway, these big names have only fueled the league’s rise in popularity, both in South Africa and beyond.
  4. Soweto Derby Fever: The legendary Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates never fails to draw huge crowds. Whether packed in stadiums or glued to TV screens, fans can’t get enough of this epic rivalry that remains one of African football’s most thrilling showdowns.
  5. Launching Global Careers: The PSL has proven to be a springboard for international stars, with players like Percy Tau making their mark. After rising through the ranks at Mamelodi Sundowns, Tau took his talents to Europe, even playing in the English Premier League, showing how the PSL cultivates top-notch talent.

These fun facts highlight the PSL’s impact on South African football and its growing influence on the global stage.
