The Betway Premiership 2026/27
Football fans have a lot to be happy about in 2026. Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage of the FIFA Football World Cup, a feat our national football team had never achieved before. The achievement shows just how far the team has come. Banyana Banyana is also making the country proud after reaching the WAFCON quarter-finals.
While the international football season may be coming to a close till end of August, South African football fans can now turn their attention to the new Premier Soccer League season (PSL), which has just kicked off. The Premier Soccer League has brought local football action to the nation since its formation in 1996. The league consists of 16 clubs from across South Africa. Last season saw Orlando Pirates win the title, ending Mamelodi Sundowns’ incredible run of eight consecutive PSL championships. The 2026/2027 campaign is the 31st edition of the league. It will run over 30 matchdays before concluding in late May 2027.
Relegated and Promoted Teams
Every season, the two clubs that finish at the bottom of the table are relegated from the league. Last season saw Orbit College FC and Magesi FC drop out of the competition. Kruger United and Milford FC replaced them.
Kruger United, from Mpumalanga, earned promotion by finishing top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Milford FC, from Richards Bay, secured promotion through the National First Division. This season marks the first time both clubs will compete in the Betway Premiership.

Transfers in the Premier League
Transfers in the Premier Soccer League work differently from those in Europe. South African clubs rarely disclose how much they pay for players, while European clubs usually make transfer fees public.
Orlando Pirates signed Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen for an undisclosed fee this season. However, some outgoing transfers do reveal the transfer amount. Relebohile Mofokeng recently left Pirates after Royale Union Saint-Gilloise signed him for €3.5 million (around R65 million).
Upcoming Clashes in the PSL
Matchday 1 of the 30-match season took place over the weekend of 1 August. A total of nine matches were played, with Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Polokwane City, AmaZulu and Sekhukhune United all moving to the top of the table after winning their opening fixtures. Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Wandile Duba was the standout performer of the opening weekend, scoring two goals. There is also the MTN8 quarter finals taking place over the weekend of the 7th of August.

Betting on the Premier Soccer League
The Betway Premiership offers punters a wide range of betting markets. Popular options include Match Result, Double Chance and BTTS (Both Teams To Score). Many South African bookmakers also offer live betting, allowing punters to place bets while the matches are in progress. Because the league runs over several months, bettors also have plenty of time to analyse team form and make more informed betting decisions.
Looking forward to the 2026/2027 season
Last season was one of the most exciting in recent memory. The title race went right down to the final day, with Orlando Pirates needing to win their last match to lift the trophy and they did exactly that. Predicting this season’s champion is almost impossible with so many matches still to play and teams still finding their rhythm. My bet is on another thrilling campaign and, hopefully, a new champion lifting the trophy. Also have a look at the latest betway PSL Promotion running frm 31 July to 13 September 2026.
