Giro d’Italia 2021

Giro d’Italia 2021

Winning the Giro is a big deal!

The list of past winners contains the names of legends of the sport. The likes of Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain and in more recent years Alberto Contador, Chris Froome and Nairo Quintana have all finished on the top step of the eventual podium.  Italian winners such as Marco Pantani and Vincenzo Nibali are idols within Italy, such is the hype within the home country. With the only former winner in Nibali participating this year, odds are that there will be a new winner crowned at the end of the 3 weeks. One thing is for certain- fans are in for a treat.

History of the Giro d’Italia

Inspired by the success of the Tour de France, along with the belief that a race around Italy was needed, the idea for the Giro came about. The first race took place in 1909, with only the World War years preventing the tour from occurring. The Italian sporting newspaper, the La Gazzetta dello Sport has been heavily involved in the organization of the Giro since 1909. Inspired by the pink colour of the newspaper’s pages, the race leaders’ jersey has been pink since its inception in 1931. The colour pink is synonymous with the Giro d’Italia (much like yellow is for the Tour de France).

When is the Giro d’Italia 2021?

The 2021 event will be the 104th time that the Giro has taken place. Generally occurring around the month of May, the Giro is the first of the 3 grand tours to take place each year. Over the years, 22 riders have won the event on more than 2 occasions. Alfredo Binda, Fausto Coppi and Eddy Merckx each have 5 victories to their name. In recent years only Ivan Basso, Alberto Contador and Vincenzo Nibali have won the tour more than once. Nibali would love to take his tally to 3 wins, but age may not be on his side.

Classifications for Giro

The competition for the general classification is always the most in focus for all 3 grand tours. The Giro is no exception. The overall winner is the rider who completes the tour in the lowest accumulated time across the 21 stages.

The jersey colours explained?

The leader of this competition within the tour wears a pink jersey, also referred to as the Maglia Rosa. Merely wearing this iconic jersey for one day is a noticeable achievement. The other competitions within the tour are for the points, mountains, and best young rider within the general classification (under 25).

The points competition is generally the one for the sprinters, whereby riders will look to amass the most consistent top placed finishes over the course of the event (points are awarded according to finishing position in each stage). The leader of the points competition wears the purple ‘ciclamino’ jersey.

The leader of the mountain’s classification wears the blue jersey. Points are awarded to riders who are first to summit significant climbs during the race. The rider with the most accumulated points at the finish is the winner.

The last of the classifications is the best young rider competition. This is signified by the white jersey, or Maglia Bianca. The event works the same way as the general classification but is only relevant to riders under the age of 25.

2021 contenders

There are several riders looking to add the Giro d’Italia to their palmares. Notably, the only previous winner of the event competing in the 2021 edition is the 2016 champion, Vincenzo Nibali.

Last year’s winner, Tao Geoghegan Hart is focussing on the Tour de France this year. The 2019 and 2018 victors, Richard Carapaz and Chris Froome are also both absent. This opens the door for a number of riders looking to make a name for themselves in the Italian grand tour. Simon Yates may very well be the favourite this year. His form in 2021 has been impressive, and the 2018 Vuelta champion will feel he has unfinished business after the 2018 event, where he enjoyed a long stint in pink but couldn’t keep up the intensity at the back end of the race.

Joao Almeida and Jai Hindley could be two of the strongest contenders after both having a stellar 2020 tour. 2019 Tour de France champion Egan Bernal will be looking to get back to winning ways. Egan has struggled to replicate his grand tour winning form. If his recent back issues don’t play up, the climber from Colombia will be a real threat.

Other ‘outsider’ contenders include the talented climber Miguel Landa, the 2021 Vuelta third placed finisher Hugh Carthy and the 2019 Tour de France fourth placed finisher Emanuel Buchmann. One can also never rule out Vincenzo Nibali- perhaps a bit on the wrong side of his peak years and currently recovering from a wrist fracture, the ‘shark of Messina’ knows how to win and is a tactical genius.

What about Evenepoel?

Quite how wonder kid Remco Evenepoel will perform is also a big unknown. Touted as the next big thing in cycling, Evenepoel is a prodigious talent. At 21 has already won some big races. Returning from a nasty injury sustained at last year’s Il Lombardia, his racing form is thus unknown. The fact that this is his first grand tour could also limit how far he goes in this year’s Giro.

Exciting 3 weeks

However the Giro plays out, one thing for sure is that it won’t be short of action and drama. Being the first grand tour of the year, all eyes will be on who can make the first big statement of 2021. Can Nibali add a third title to his name? Will there be a new winner come Sunday the 30th of May? Be sure not to miss out on the action!

Pakistan vs. South Africa Test Match Series Review

And that’s all she wrote. The Pakistan vs. South Africa Test Match Series Review was hyped up to be something special and of big significance. The first test series for a visiting South Africa to Pakistan since 2007. This would also be the first time for majority of the players to play in Pakistan itself. Those players who have played against Pakistan would have done so either on home soil or at a neutral venue such as Abu Dhabi or Dubai. All because of ongoing security fears.

Betting on cricket in the subcontinent is a big deal. If you are new to online cricket betting, why not read our cricket betting strategy and tips article.

With players already having to live in bio-bubbles because of the COVID pandemic, the added security surely could play a role on the mental aptitude of the players. But what the added security did give us was South Africa playing in the subcontinent against a familiar foe. We sure did enjoy watching both tests.

Team Performance Coming into Series

Pakistan came into the test series with a LLDDL record. With their most recent loss against New Zealand resulting in an innings and 176 runs. They also only once scored more than 300 runs in their last 10 innings played. South Africa on the other hand came of their first series win – against Sri Lanka – since 2019 and was hoping to carry the momentum into the Pakistan series. South Africa’s recent form read, WWLLL.

1st Test Highlights and Summery

The first test was played in Karachi between Jan 26 – Jan 29 2021. 2 Players made their test debut, both in the Pakistani team. They were Imran Butt and Nauman Ali. The latter also picking up a match defining five-wicket haul in South Africa’s 2nd innings.

South Africa never really got going, posting a mediocre total of just 220 all out in their first innings. Dean Elgar was the leading run scorer with a hard fought 58 of 106 balls. With no real threatening partnership and with Pakistan picking up wickets at regular intervals, the visitors found themselves on the backfoot early in the test.

Pakistan came out with intent, but 2 quick wickets by Rabada had the hosts pegged back for a while. Azar Ali stood firm while 2 more quick wickets fell around him, and Pakistan found themselves on 4-27. That is until Fawad Alam joined him at the crease. The pair started the rebuilding process and added 94 runs before Ali was removed. Alam stuck around a little longer and again formed a strong partnership with Faheem Ashraf when they put 102 runs on the board taking Pakistan into the lead. Pakistan finished their 1st innings on 378, a lead of 158 with Fawad Alam scoring a 109 runs.

Can South Africa Rebuild?

With a mountain to climb South Africa started their 2nd innings with caution, it paid off with Elgar and Markram adding 48 runs before Elgar lost his wicket for 29. It looked like Markram finally started finding some form when he and Rassie van der Dussen put on 127 for the 2nd wicket partnership. South Africa looked like they were rebuilding and doing so well. The score 175/1.

It was not to be. The loss of van der Dussen’s wicket sparked a massive collapse. The only notable score was Bavuma’s 40. South Africa managing to add only 58 runs to their overnight score before being bowled out for 245, a lead of 88.

Although Pakistan lost 2 early wickets, both taken by Nortje, in their chase of 88, they were not going to let this win slip away. The hosts reached their total in 23.5 overs.

It was only Pakistan’s fifth win over South Africa while it was South Africa’s eighth successive defeat on the subcontinent.

The 2nd test only a couple of days away, South Africa with a lot of troubleshooting to do. Can they level the series?

2nd Test Highlights and Summery

Still licking their wounds from the loss, a couple of days back, South Africa was hoping they could turn things around and level the series in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat. South Africa started well with Maharaj, who would end the innings with figures of 3-90, picked up the wicket of Imran Butt in the 12th over. Maharaj in his next over removed the new batsmen, Azhar Ali for 0. In 15th over, Nortje picked up his 1st of what would be a 5-for when he removed Abid Ali for 6. Pakistan finding themselves in a difficult position on 3-22.

With Azam and Alam at the crease the pair stood firm putting together a 4th wicket partnership of 123 runs. Bavuma ran out Alam with a clear hit of the stumps when he tried to pinch a single on the offside. Pakistan continued to put meaningful partnership together but apart from Faheem Ashraf scoring an unbeaten 78, there we no other batsmen making it into double figures. With Maharaj and Nortje cleaning up the tail with relative ease. Nortje ending his innings with figures of 5-56. Pakstan 1st innings total, 272.

How will South Africa Respond?

South Africa started in familiar fashion by losing one of their openers cheaply. First to go was SA’s highest scoring batsmen in the 1st test 1st innings Elgar. Out for 21. Van der Dussen was out the very next ball. South Africa lost wickets at regular intervals with Faf Du Plessis out on 17 while batting with Bavuma. Bavuma managed to carry his bat to the end of the innings, this does not mean he scored a lot of runs, ending the day on an unbeaten 44. South Africa losing 5 wickets for 37 runs in their 1st innings.

Pakistan started their 2nd innings with a 71-run lead. South Africa had an early breakthrough getting Imran Butt out for 0. Again, Pakistan managed to create valuable partnerships. The standout batsmen of Pakistand’s 2nd innings came from the new captain, Mohammad Rizwan, ending the innings unbeaten on 115. Although South Africa took regular wickets, it just was not enough. Standout bowling performance coming from George Linde, picking up his first 5-wicket haul. South Africa need a total of 370 runs to win the match. If it was to be done, would have been the highest successful run chase in Pakistan.

Can South Africa Level The Series?

It was going to be a monumental ask. But we know SA was capable of chasing down 370. They had the time and they definitely have the talent.

South Africa started well, with Markram finally standing firm and reading the ball managed to build meaningful partnerships. A solid 94-run partnership with van der Dussen for the 2nd wicket, followed but a 106-run partnership with Bavuma after Faf fell for 5. South Africa looked good and in the driving seat on 241 for 3. Requiring only 129 runs for a famous victory, it was not to be. Markram, scoring his first century since 2018 fell shortly after lunch. The very next ball removed captain de Cock, leaving Bavuma and the tail to chase 129 runs. South Africa lost their last 7 wickets for a meagre 33 runs, and with that the chance to level the series.

Hasan Ali, picking up another 5 wickets to add to is 1st innings 5-wicket haul ended the match with figures of 10-114. A man of the match performance. This was Pakistan’s first series win over South Africa in 17 years.

Takeaway of the Test Series

This loss also means South Africa have now lost four of their last 5 test series and 10 of their last 13 test matches.

Although South Africa have some positives to take away from the defeat, such as Markram finding some form there is a lot for the team and staff to consider. De Kock has struggled for runs since taking over the captaincy from Faf, but at least it looks like he will be relieved of the burden.

This leaves South Africa with a Test captaincy dilemma. At least one they do not have to rush to fill. With the incoming tour of Australia cancelled as result of Covid fears, there is time. South Africa is not scheduled to play a test match again during the summer.

Next South Africa shift their attention to the shorter format of the game. 3 T20I scheduled, the first on the 11th of February. All to be played in Lahore. Let’s hope they can get back to winning ways.

South Africa Test Form coming into this Series

South Africa lost their last away series in India 3-0 at the end of 2019. They were hoping to bounce back at home in the summer against the visiting England.

Things were looking good when the hosts won the 2019 Boxing day Test Match against England at Newlands. The high would not last long with South Africa going on to lose the series 3-1. The first back to back home series loss since the 1950s.

We have not had a lot of red ball cricket leading up to this series as a result of COVID-19. Needless to say we were very happy the match was on and ended with a result.

South African Players Receive Maiden test call-ups

Injuries to Kagiso Rabada – the world #6 test bowler – and all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius, meant reinforcements had to be called in. This made way for 2 new players.

Top-order batsman and former U-19 captain Raynard van Tonder & fast bowler Lutho Sipamla were added to the SA squad.

Sipamla made his debut and announced himself to the test world with match figures of 6 for 100 runs. Van Tonder who is currently the leading run scorer in the SA domestic four-day series will have to wait a little longer for his debut. Who knows, perhaps Wanderers could be his chance.

For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga made his debut and impressed with his bowling finishing the match with 4/171.

Sri Lanka 1st Innings Highlights

There was an early breakthrough for South Africa when Ngidi bowled Karunaratne with the visitors on 28. Not long after, Ngidi was in action again, although not as bowler this time. Ngidi took an easy catch at mid-on when Nortjie picked up his only scalp of the innings with the visitors on 54.

Mulder joined the party in the next over when he took the wicket of K. Perera with the batsmen on 16. The visitors’ score on 54/3.

The excitement was to be short-lived for the hosts when Chandimal and DM de Silva settled down and started rebuilding. The two put together a beautiful 4th wicket partnership of 131 when disaster struck. De Silva took a quick single while on 79 and what looked like a cramp ended up being a series ending hamstring tear. He will no longer play a role in the tour.

The score was on 185/3. Dickwela made his way to the middle and along with Chandimal put together a 5th wicket partnership of 99 before Mulder picked up is 2nd of the innings. Chandimal was caught off guard by some extra bounce in the pitch while playing at it and Faf taking an easy catch. He scored 85.

At Tea on the 1st Day, the visitors were standing on 290/4. Dickwela batted on but was caught LBW by that man Mulder on 49. Sri Lanka’s core on 296/5.

Sri Lanka’s Shanaka was the last man standing with an unbeaten 66 of 87 balls. He helped push the visitor’s 1st innings total to a respectable 396.

South Africa 1st Innings Highlights

Markram and Elgar started proceedings of in a hurry and quickly reached 50 runs in the 13th over. The two opening batsmen continued to shine and brought up the 100-run partnership in the 22nd over. They pushed on to the drinks break where the score stood on an unbeaten 129.

South Africa lost their 1st wicket, that of Markram, with the score on 141. An impressive first wicket partnership. Rassie van der Dussen was the man in at No.3 and along with Elgar put 59 runs on the board before Rassie nicked one to the keeper while on 15.

Former captain, Faf du Plessis, was the new man at the crease. Along with Elgar the in man and in the nervous 90s looked sure to score a 100. It was not to be for Dean this time. The next over Dean Elgar was caught & bowled by Shanaka, he was on 95. Still, a well-played innings.

Captain De Cock joined the former captain in the middle. He straight away showed that he was not going to hang around. With 3 quick 4s he raced to 18 runs of only 11 balls but then gave his wicket away to the Sri Lankan debutant Hasaranga.

The Faf and Bavuma Show

The hosts, having gone from 141 for no loss to 223/4 had to start rebuilding themselves. And that is just what they did.

Bavuma joined Faf and the pair proceeded to swing the match back in favour of the hosts with both batsmen sticking around for the remainder of the day. With du Plessis on 55 and Bavuma 41 and South Africa on 317/4 at close of play on Day 2. South Africa still trailing Sri Lanka’s 1st innings total by 79 runs.

Day 3 saw South Africa get off to a good start. Both batsmen adding to their overnight scores and reaching their 50s. At the time of drinks, Bavuma was on 64 and Faf on 76.

With the 5th wicket partnership standing on 179 runs, Bavuma slashed at one and missed. This did not stop the batsmen walking off leaving the commentators speechless as they watched the replays and noticing there was no contact between bat and ball. Bavuma out for 71.

South Africa Push on and Into the Lead

At lunch, the hosts had passed Sri Lanka’s 1st innings total and was standing on 435/5. The man of the moment Faf, unbeaten on 112, his 10th Test century.

Du Plessis and Mulder both had a few lucky escapes while building their 77-run partnership. Mulder finally succumbed to Hasaranga the next ball after being dropped on the ball before.

With Maharaj at the crease, he and Faf continued to make light work of the Sri Lankan bowling attack. The bowlers now were visibly exhausted. Faf brought up his 150 in the 114th over with South Africa on 498/6.

At Tea on the 3rd day, South Africa had reached a massive 565/6, a lead of 169 runs and the man of the moment, Faf du Plessis on 177 and Maharaj on an unbeaten 43. Faf and Maharaj brought up the 100-run stand not long after the tea break.

Cricket Test Records are there to be broken

With the score on 585/6 it also meant that it was South Africa’s highest Test total against Sri Lanka ever.

South Africa passed the 600-run mark in the 136th over with Faf on 196, just 4 runs away from a double ton.

It was not to be. With du Plessis on 199, he tried playing one over the top but did not get hold of it as well as he would have wanted to and ended up picking out the man at mid-on. His highest test score and probably one of the now 36-year old’s greatest innings.

Nortje was the next man in, and did not last long, losing his wicket for 0 after facing only 3 balls. Debutant Sipmala falling just 2 balls later, also for 0 with Maharaj the last man to fall for a well-played 73.

South Africa, now with the highest test score at SuperSport Park ended their innings on 621. A 1st innings lead of 225.

Sri Lanka 2nd Innings Highlights

With roughly 12 overs left to bowl on Day 3, Sri Lanka found them in a spot of bother when Ngidi clean bowled Karunaratne for 6 in the 3rd over with the visitors on 10. Ngidi followed up his performance of his previous over with another wicket, this time that of Mendis for 0.

At close of play on Day 3, Sri Lanka stood on 65/2 still trailing South Africa by a massive 160 runs.

Day 4 saw Kusal Perera on 33 and Dinesh Chandimal on 21 forged on for Sri Lanka. The pair battled on, adding 63 runs for the 3rd wicket partnership before Mulder bowled Chandimal for 25.

Sri Lanka on 99/4 and Perera the only truly recognised batsmen left standing, the visitors found it difficult to get going again, losing wickets regularly and their last 4 wickets for a measly 26 runs.

South Africa finally wrapped up the match by an innings and 45 runs and in the process earning an extra day’s rest.

Sipamla finishing his debut test match with figures of 6 wickets for 100 runs. Mulder playing only in his 2nd test also one of the other standout performers with both bat and ball. Bagging 5 wickets and adding 36 runs with the bat.

The Man of the match award went to Faf du Plessis with his best test score of 199.

Cricket Test Match Summary

Overall, it was a good cricket test match. Sri Lanka will be worried with the number of injuries they have picked up. They do have enough replacements available and have also said that they will not make wholesale changes to the team for the 2nd test.

South Africa can now not lose this series, but a draw will not be good enough. They want the series win, and Sri Lanka will not lie down or just give it to the host on a silver platter, it will have to be earned.

The teams next head to Wanderers for the 2nd Betway Cricket Test – the New Years’ test. Play scheduled to start on 3rd of January 2021.

No confirmation on starting 11 yet for South Africa, but we hope to see another debutant or 2 in action.

Betway is the sponsors of this test series along with being a main sponsor for South African cricket. They are also of the most well know and biggest online sportsbooks in South Africa. Read our detailed review of Betway and sign up for your free welcome offer if you do not have an account yet.

Online Soccer Betting Strategy & Tips

Online Soccer Betting in South Africa

With over 4 billion fans across the world, it is easy to see why online soccer betting is ranked number 1 when it comes to amount staked each year.

It is estimated that during the 2018 football world cup an $136 million were wagered during the entire tournament.

Everyone bets for the same reason, to win some money. Having a strategy in place can help you achieve this. There are plenty of simple and complex soccer betting strategies available online to learn.

Read on for a few of our favourite soccer betting strategies and tips that could help you beat the bookies.

Value Soccer Betting

As with any strategy, the more data you have on the sport the better the chance of you making a profit.

Value betting is one of the best-known betting strategies. A value bet is a bet where the odds are at least 1/1, as such a 50% probability. So, you have a chance of high profits but also losses. This strategy is not for punters who are looking to make a steady profit over a period.

Using a value betting strategy, you are searching for odds which might be undervalued by the bookie. If you believe the odds are greater than what the bookies are offering you take advantage of them. This strategy requires a lot of research and comparisons with odds offered by different bookies.

An example of value betting is where a bookie offers you odds of 2/1 for a Team A to win. That is a 33.3% probability of Team A winning. If you have done your research and think the probability of Team A winning is around 50% because of their form or historical results, you have identified a good value bet.

Accumulator Bets

Accumulator bets can be both exciting and very profitable. It is also a betting strategy used by many people who are new to online betting.

An accumulator bet, also called an acca or roll-up is where you link several bets on different events or across multiple games into a single bet.

The more bets you link, the higher the potential returns, but the lower the probability of your bets paying out. For an ACCA bet to pay out, all your bets need to be correct.

Different Types of Acca Bets

Double – Two bets, both need to win
Treble – Three bets, all three need to win
Trixie – A Trixie is a collection of bets made up of 3 Double bets and a Treble bet in one. 2 of the 3 bets must win to get paid.
Goliath – A Goliath is made up of eight selections, with each selection combined with the others to create 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 fourfold, 56 fivefold, 28 sixfold, 8 sevenfold and one eightfold accumulator, for a total of 247 accumulator bets.

There are plenty of other acca bet types so be sure to do your research. You wont regret it.

Overs and Unders

Using this strategy is easy and relatively simple and don’t require a lot of time and effort. Overs and Unders is where you are placing a bet or acca bet on the number of goals over or under the goal line.

Although it is not a guaranteed winner, it’s a 50/50 chance and gives you better odds compared to a W/D/W bet where you only have a 1/3 chance of winning.

Online betting strategies should be based on statistics and data. For an Overs and Unders strategy, you would need to know the average number of goals a team has scored or conceded per match during the season both at home and away. When you have totals for both teams playing – with one team playing away and the other at home – you should be able to calculate the average goals that are likely to be scored during the game.

Online football betting in South Africa can be a fun and exciting activity. The number of online sportsbooks has also increased drastically. This gives the new and seasoned punters a good selection of places to bet online.

With bookies all wanting you to bet with them they will offer you extras such as Hollywoodbets who give you access to all past results. This allows you to be more efficient in your strategies. Some sites will also offer you free daily tips when you subscribe to their tips newsletters. Both are great sources of information to help you find the best odds.

Betting on soccer should be fun and although no strategy or tip is ever a guaranteed winner, remember to set yourself a budget to help you manage your spending.

If you are ready to try place your first online soccer bet, why not have a look at our top online soccer betting sites.

Cricket Betting Strategy & Tips

Main Types of Cricket Betting Online

There are 4 main betting categories in cricket namely:

  • Match

  • Innings
  • Player

Each of these categories offer a multitude of different bets within and we have decided to compile a short list of our favourite cricket bets under each of these.

Most Sixes – Betting on the team to hit the most sizes during their innings.

Which Team Wins the Coin Toss – Placing a bet on the team to win the coin toss before the match starts.

Dismissals during first X overs – The odds are usually high for a team to take a wicket or more during their opening overs. Most bookies offer good odds for these types of bets.

Overs Betting

Innings Betting

Team with Highest Score at First Dismissal – The team which scores the highest total of runs prior to losing their first wicket.

Innings Over and Under Betting – Similar to the over and under betting during a specific over, this bet is placed on the total number of runs being over or under.

Team Individual Top Batter – You can also place a bet on a specific individual player within each of the teams to have scored the most runs.

Individual Top Bowler In Team – Placing a bet on a specific individual player within each of the teams to have taken the greatest number of wickets.

Any Player to Score a Milestone – From time to time bookies will offer you a few novelty bets. An example of this where you are betting on any player in the match from either of the teams to achieve a personal milestone. This could be from their highest batting total, best bowling figures or most number of catches to name a few.

Online Cricket Betting Strategy and Tips

We have covered this topic a lot, and although it does not change much, having a cricket betting strategy when it comes to betting is key.

Below are a few key points to consider and include in your betting strategy:

Know and understand the sport you are betting on

People enjoy sport for various reasons. One thing is for sure, people do not watch a sport they do not like. So why bet on a sport you don’t like or watch.

The more information or knowledge you have on a particular sport, the more informed choices you can make. This should lead to better results.

Winners and Losers

Apart from the occasional draw in test cricket, most T20 or ODI matches will have a result. Even these might then be decided by a super over meaning there will be a winner and a loser.

When you bet, you will lose some of your bets. You cannot always win. Expect to lose up to 48% of your bets.

Have a betting Budget

Whether you are betting for fun or to make money. It is key to set yourself a betting budget. Know what you want to spend each month. Also know what you can afford to lose.

There will be times where you are on a losing streak, by having and sticking to your online betting budget will help you mange your spending.

Our #1 betting tip: Do not chase your losses.

Rugby Betting Strategy & Tips

The Basics of Rugby Union

Rugby is a strategic game played by 2 teams of 15 players each. The game consists of 2 halves. Each half lasts 40 minutes. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. Teams score points through tries, conversion kicks and penalty kicks. Games can also end in a draw. As with a normal rugby game, so do you need a rugby betting strategy when you bet online.

Betting on Rugby Online

You can place rugby bets online or at a retail outlet. If you want to know which online bookies we recommend for betting on rugby why not have a look at our list of best online rugby betting sites in South Africa.

If you are unsure of what bets to place on rugby, have a look at some of our rugby betting tips below. We also explain some of the more popular bets and what each of them mean.

Rugby Tournaments to Bet on in South Africa

As South Africans, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to both local and international rugby matches and competitions to bet on.

The Currie Cup is the premier South African domestic rugby tournament consisting of 14 teams. Super Rugby is another great tournament where teams from Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa battle it out. South Africa have 4 teams that participate in the tournament namely, Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers.

On top of the provincial competitions, South Africa (The Springboks) also participate in the Rugby Championship between The Bokke, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.

So, as you can see, there are plenty of choice when it comes to rugby betting online.

As with most sports, the main bets to place on a match are:

  • Match Result
  • Double Chance
  • Halftime/Fulltime
  • Odd or Even Total
  • Half Time Result
  • 1st Half – Double Chance
  • Highest Scoring Half

Most of these bets are self-explanatory. The ones you might be questioning are probably, Double Chance and 1st Half Double Chance.

A double chance bet allows you to cover two of the three possible outcomes in a match placing a single bet. These include: Home team and draw – Your bet is a winner if the home team wins or draws the match. Away team and draw – Your bet is a winner if the away team wins or draws the match.

A 1st Half – Double Chance bet is similar to the standard Double Chance bet, but the result is based on the home team leading at half time or the scores are tied or the away team is leading or scores are tied.

Other popular bets also include, winning margin, first team or player to score or first scoring play. First scoring play refers to the way the scoring is opened through a try, penalty try, drop goal, or penalty – a bet on the first scoring play is an interesting market to dabble in. A penalty has the lowest odds, and for good reason.

For the more adventurous punter, you can now also place a bet on live matches. In play betting allows you to place a bet on events such as next team to score or next try scorer or even who will knock the ball on next. The possibilities are endless.

Rugby Betting Strategy

The most successful teams are the ones who execute their strategy the best. If you are planning on betting on rugby online, you will also need a strategy and execute it well.

Below we have shared a few points on creating a rugby betting strategy & tips.

Knowledge is king, know your teams

Every team has its strengths and weaknesses, you should know these. Read up about your team’s opponents and past results. This will assist you in making more informed decisions on the type of bets to place.

Watch the weather

Usually rugby gets played in the winter months. Almost all the stadiums are open and as such the weather can drastically change the way teams play the game. Slippery pitches, a wet ball, these factors can easily change the game to a low scoring affair. These are critical information for your margin bets.

News & Updates

Keep an eye on team selection, injuries, and last-minute changes. Teams can plan for almost everything, but injuries can happen at any time. An injury to your best player or impact player can easily have a negative impact on the game plans.

Know Your Betting Markets

Whether you are betting on the attacking team or the defensive team, be sure to know your markets. If the team you are backing statistically concede points first, why would you back them for scoring first. Look at the odds, if its too good to be true, usually it is.

Know Your Team’s Form

Both the Currie Cup and Super Rugby tournaments cover a long period of time. Teams will most likely improve as they progress through the tournament while playing week on week. As such, the form of your team will tell you a lot about their possible performance. Use this knowledge when placing your bets.

The Rugby Championship consists of only a few matches. The tournament also comes after a lengthy international break and as such, with teams not having played together means form does not always carry a lot of weight going into the match.

Stick to your Rugby Betting Strategy

If you are going for high risk quick wins or low risk small wins, stick to your rugby betting strategy.

You might go through some unlucky spells, that’s normal, but don’t start chasing your losses. If you use the data available to you and place sensible bets, your best should come off.

If the odds seem too good to be true, again they probably are, longshot bets seldom come off, but this does not mean you shouldn’t place them from time to time. Who would have thought Japan would make it to the quarter finals of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Lastly, create and stick to your betting budget. Managing your spending is key to enjoying your online betting experience.

The Six Nations Rugby Tournament Explained

Comprising the ‘big boys’ of Northern Hemisphere rugby, the Six Nations is one of the premier international competitions on the rugby calendar. There have been many famous battles between teams and players alike since the tournament’s inception. Be it Brian O’Driscoll’s brilliance, Martin Johnson’s brute force or the flair of Frederic Michalak, fans have witnessed some of the game’s best over the years.

Will the Southern Hemisphere powerhouse, South Africa join the six nations tournament in years to come? Nobody seems to know for certain, but it remains a hot topic world over.

When did the Six Nations begin?

The Six Nations as we know it today began as the Home Nations Championship. This competition began in 1883. This makes it the first international rugby union tournament that took place. The Home Nations Championship consisted of teams from England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. In 1910, France joined the competition, and the Five Nations was born. This remained the status quo until 2000 when Italy joined the party. This is how the competition has remained ever since. With the addition of Italy, the name changed to the Six Nations.

How does it work?

Each team plays each other once during the Six Nations. The team who enjoys home ground advantage alternates each year. The Championship Trophy goes to the winners of the tournament. Teams that win all their matches win the ‘Grand Slam’. England led the charge here, having achieved this on 13 occasions. The home nation teams of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales all compete for The ‘Triple Crown’ which is a sub-trophy. This dates to the original Home Nations Championship. The team who win all three of their matches against the home nation opposition wins the trophy. By managing this on 26 occasions, England again are the team that has accomplished this feat the most times.

Additional trophies

There are various other competitions that the Six Nations teams compete for amongst themselves. These contests mainly take place during the competition itself. The oldest of the individual competitions is the Calcutta Cup. England and Scotland first contested for this trophy in 1879. The second oldest competition is the Millennium Trophy which were introduced in 1988 and is competed for by Ireland and England. Ireland and Scotland compete for the Centenary Quaich which was brought into being in 1989. Since the Six Nations as we know it began in 2000, the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy (between Italy and France), the Auld Alliance Trophy (between France and Scotland), and the Doddie Weir Cup (between Wales and Scotland) have all been introduced.

Recent Results

Since 2000, the team that has won the most titles are England with six wins. France and Wales have both won the competition five times, while Ireland have won it on four occasions. Scotland last won in 1999 when the competition was still in the Five Nations format. Italy have not yet managed to win a title. In fact, they have finished last on 14 occasions, and so are clearly the weakest of the teams (on average) in the competition. Wales won the title in 2019 and were subsequently one of the favourites for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Eventual winners South Africa defeated the Welsh in a closely contested semi-final.

The 2020 Six Nations still needs to be concluded after the competition was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic with a round to play. The tournament is set to resume in October. As it currently stands England and France occupy the top spot with 13 points a-piece. Each team have one more game to play.

Will South Africa join the Six Nations?

Rumours of the South African rugby team joining the Six Nations have been around for a while now. The Boks are currently part of the Rugby Championship, a Southern Hemisphere tournament between South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina. Widely considered to be the most prestigious annual rugby tournament around, the Rugby Championship’s future is uncertain. Domestic teams, the Cheetahs and the Kings from South Africa have recently joined the Pro14. This is an annual competition featuring teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Italy (and now South Africa).

There is uncertainty around the future of the Super Rugby competition, and rumours of a possible South African exclusion. If this does occur, it won’t come as a surprise if all South African domestic teams join Northern Hemisphere competitions. Time zone challenges will be a thing of the past (along with jet lag). One feels that if South African domestic competition plies its trade with Northern Hemisphere teams, it will only be a matter of time before the Springboks follow suit.

The Six Nations is a widely respected rugby tournament, should South Africa join however, the level of competition will increase substantially. The three times world champions would only bolster the already successful format. The real losers in all of this would be New Zealand and Australia. What comes of this, only time will tell.

Hollywoodbets Sponsors the Dolphins

Hollywoodbets first entered the fray with the Dolphins as associate sponsors in the 2015/ 2016 season. Since the 2016/ 2017 season Hollywoodbets have progressed to becoming the full title sponsors of the Dolphins cricket franchise. This partnership has gone from strength to strength over the years. Hollywoodbets also acquired the naming rights sponsorship of Kingsmead stadium in Durban from October 2019.

Who is Hollywoodbets?

Hollywoodbets is a sports betting company, that operates in South Africa, Ireland, Mozambique and the United Kingdom. The company is based in South Africa, with its headquarters situated in the city of Durban. In 2000, Hollywoodbets opened their first retail branch and now operate more than 80 branches as well as online.

Cricket, rugby, football, and horse racing are a few of the sports that Hollywoodbets offers betting on. The horse racing track, Hollywood Park Racetrack in Los Angeles is where inspiration for the name came about. The company has continued to gain momentum over the years. In 2019 iGaming Business Magazine published the top 50 gaming sites worldwide. Hollywoodbets ranked number 8 on this list. It is clear to see that while the company has humble South African beginnings, it is making waves globally too.

Hollywoodbets and sports sponsorships

Hollywoodbets does not only have an affiliation to the KZNCU Dolphins. The company has been involved in multiple other sports sponsorships over the years.

In the football world, the 2019 COSAFA Cup held in Durban was an event that Hollywoodbets played a part in from a sponsorship perspective. In horse racing, the company is the naming rights sponsor for both the Greyville, and the Scottsville race courses. This is a three-year deal, which began in 2019. From a rugby perspective, Hollywoodbets has been the title sponsor of the Kwazulu-Natal interclub competition, the Murray Cup since 2018. The event has been around since 1890, and this makes it the oldest knockout rugby union competition in the world. More recently Hollywoodbets has become an associate sponsor to the Sharks rugby team. The deal will run for 3 years ending in 2022. The company logo will appear on the players kit in both Super Rugby and Currie Cup games.

The KZNCU Dolphins cricket franchise

The KZNCU Dolphins cricket franchise is one of the most successful South African cricket teams. Over the years they have won competitions in all three formats of the game. Most recently they shared the spoils of the 2019/ 2020 Momentum One Day Cup with the Warriors. The final match got abandoned due to rain, and thus no outright winner could be decided.

Along with domestic success, the franchise has also been a breeding ground for many cricket stars. Former players such as Lance Klusener, Jonty Rhodes and Shaun Pollock all went on to have successful careers playing for the national team, the Proteas. When not on national duty, Proteas players, Imran Tahir, Andile Phehlukwayo and David Millar are all part of the Hollywoodbets Dolphins squad .

The relationship between the franchise and Hollywoodbets has flourished since the initial associate deal was penned in the 2015/ 2016 season. The current title sponsor deal is set to expire at the end of 2020. It would not be a surprise if both parties extend the deal further into the future.

Hollywoodbets Sponsorship in South Africa

Hollywoodbets was nominated as sponsor of the year for the 2020 Momentum gsports Awards. The nomination was for the title sponsorship that Hollywoodbets has with the KwaZulu- Natal coastal women’s provincial cricket team. What is significant, is that this is the first female cricketing franchise that has ever received title sponsorship within South Africa.

The award ultimately went to SPAR, who has a long-standing affiliation with netball and road running. The nomination for Hollywoodbets however was still a cause to celebrate. It provides justification to a company that has so heavily invested in various sports, particularly within Kwa-Zulu Natal. With positive publicity such as this, Hollywoodbets will most likely continue to pursue sponsorship opportunities within the sports it offers betting on.

The sponsorship of sporting teams is a growing trend among sports betting companies. More and more betting companies are joining the party on a local and global level. While perhaps traditionally viewed as taboo, the affiliation with these companies seems to be more accepted nowadays. With a changing sports environment and the current global economic environment, one feels that the acceptance of non-traditional sponsors will become more common.

For the KZNCU Dolphins, the relationship with Hollywoodbets has been fruitful up until now. A common feeling is that both parties will be looking to extend this positive relationship into the future.
