Betway SA20 Auction 2025 Recap
The countdown to the start of South Africa’s favourite cricket series the Betway SA20 has begun. The first match of the much loved cricket competition starting on the day after Xmas. A day we all know as boxing day and a cricket match or two to watch!
This will be season 4 of the Betway SA20 which is made up of six franchises from around South Africa. There are two teams from Gauteng, Pretoria Capitals as well as Joburg Super Kings. Two teams from the Western Cape, Paarl Royals and MI Cape Town. Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durban Super Giants from Natal. So let us have a look at how the betway SA20 Auction played out.
Betway SA20 Season 4 Auction
The Betway SA20 is South Africa’s answer to India’s IPL. And teams in the SA20 are also able to buy players at the sa20 2025 auction. Each team gets the chance to buy a few players at auction before the start of the new season. Teams have been allocated R41 million to spend and they follow their own strategy for buying players. Some teams opt to keep players from last season while some teams choose to create an almost entirely new team. This year’s auction had a huge list of international players to choose from.
Furthermore, each team can buy a max of 7 international players. The rest of the team must be from South Africa.
SuperSport also broadcasted the Betway SA20 auction live, where each team used its purse to bid on players. This year’s auction was stellar with the most paid for a player in the tournament up to date. Pretoria Capitals paid a whopping R16.5 million for Dewald Brevis who will be joining the team for this season. Other expensive players include, Aiden Markram who joins Durban’s Super Giants for R14 million, as well as Gerald Coetzee who joins Aiden at Durban Super Giants. He also went for a crazy R7.4 million. Joburg Super Kings paid R9 million for Wiaan Mulder and R6.3 million for Nandre Burger. Sunrisers Eastern Cape bought Matthew Breetzke for R6.1 million. And MI Cape Town bought Rassie van der Dussen for R5.2 milliion. Mindblowing amounts!

How Teams Are Created
One of the ideals of the Betway SA20 is to grow cricket locally. The tournament is also a place where up and coming talent can show their capabilities. Each team has to pick two players that are under the age of 23 for the tournament.
Each team are also able to sign a Wild Card player which can be a local or international player. The deadline to decide on a Wild Card player is on the 21st of December 2025. All teams have also already made their picks.
Heinrich Klaasen is Durban’s Super Giants Wild Card player. Whilst Donovan Ferreira is Joburg Super Kings’ Wild Card. Kagiso Rabada is in at MI Cape Town. Rubin Hermann at Paarl Royals and futhermore Andre Russell from the West Indies for Pretoria Capitals. And Marco Jansen signed at Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Match Dates and Venues
Tickets to attend the betway SA20 matches are already available to purchase. The very famous and loved Newlands will be the host of the first match taking place on the 26th of December. The opening match is between MI Cape Town and Durban’s Super Giants. The cricket action continues on the 17th with Pretoria Capitals hosting Joburg Super Kings at Centurion. Paarl Royals against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Boland Park. South Africans will be able to enjoy all the T20 drama right through January. The knock out stage of the event starts on the 21st which consist of four matches. The final match will be played at Newlands on the 25th of January.

Betting On The SA20
The Betway SA20 packs its calendar with matches that offer a variety of betting options. A favourite bet for many pundits is placing bets on franchises before the season starts. This can give odds with great returns. Sunrisers Eastern Cape seems like a good team to back if the previous seasons are anything to go by. The franchise won the first two editions of the tournament and was runner up last season. Betway will make SA20 betting for the upcoming season available closer to the start of the competition. In the mean time the odds on the exciting Boland T10 which is currently taking place are available. The final match competition is on the 27th of October.
So it seems we have plenty of cricket to look forward to this summer! The Women are performing amazingly well in the ICC ODI World Cup 2025 and are through to the semifinals. They are facing Pakistan on Tuesday 21 October and Australia in their last pool match on 25 October.
