10 Fun Facts about Rugby

10 Fun Facts about Rugby

Rugby to South Africans brings hope, passion and encouragement, it creates a spirit of community and brings a nation together. We as South Africans are extremely passionate about rugby. It has been so heart-warming seeing how involved the players have been in social outreach work during the pandemic. Most sports took a back seat during COVID-19 and have slowly but surely started making a comeback. And we are as excited as ever! We thought we would bring a bit lightheartedness by grouping some fun facts of rugby.

Let us have a look at some fun facts:

First South African inducted in the Rugby Hall of Fame

Danie Craven, who was known as Mr Rugby, was inducted to the Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007. He predominantly held the position of scrumhalf and his career spanned from 1931 to 1938. His rugby playing career was cut short due to World War 2 however he was appointed as national coach in 1949. He was instrumental in launching Craven Week in 1964. The 1st non-racial South African schoolboy competition that is till today still going strong.

Highest and lowest scoring rugby game

The highest score ever in a RWC match goes to New Zealand and Japan in 1995 in Bloemfontein. The All Blacks ran away with the game with a final score coming in at 145-17 which gives you an extraordinary total of 162 points.

In Belgium in 2015 the highest score ever was recorded between Royal Kituro vs Soignies (356 – 3). The score does seem unimaginable! However it was proven to be correct, the original referee never showed up for the match and some players from Soignies decided to leave. As a results when the game was eventually played the dwindling Soignies were still short on players.

They also carried out their own protest by just standing by and letting Royal Kitoru score due to the no show of the referee. Now that is a fun fact of rugby!

The lowest scoring rugby game ever was 0-0. However since Rugby Union became professional in 1995 there has never been a 0-0 score between fully professional national sides. The last 0 score was between Scotland vs New Zealand in 1964.

Fastest international Rugby player

At the current moment it seems that Ausie 7s star Trae Williams holds the record for fastest international rugby player to run 100m in 10.1 seconds. “Quadzilla” as he is called has made the change from a sprinter to a rugby player and made his debut at the 2019 Dubai Sevens Tournament.

By all means some other speedsters to keep in mind are Bryan Habana and Perry Baker. Habana famously ran alongside a Cheetah for charity in 2007 and the video is epic. Indeed, he is known as the king of speed and ran the 100m in under 10 seconds it is said. The race was held at the De Wildt research centre in South Africa to raise awareness of the dangers the Cheetah is currently facing.

Perry Baker has lit up the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series for a number of years and is seen as one of the fastest players with almost 200 tries under his belt. Even though he comes from an NFL background he tried rugby after an injury cut his career short. When he gets going, he is quite a sight to see.

Siya Kolisi voted most influential rugby personality of 2020

Rugby World Magazine pulls together 50 influential names in the sport every year and this year our dear Springbok Captain, Siya Kolisi, came out in the top spot. He is what role models are made of by giving inspiration and just being a human being. Siya and Rachel Kolisi started the Kolisi Foundation in 2020 (jump started a bit sooner than expected due to COVID-19) and have made a significant difference in so many communities. In an interview with CNN Siya said that helping the less fortunate is awfully close to his heart. He has experienced hunger and wants to make life just a bit easier for those that are in need. What a humble pair and it is inspiring to see that they are using their platform for such good and trying to make a positive change.

Tallest and shortest capped players

Richard Metcalfe is a former rugby union player who played for Scotland. Firtsly he is the world’s tallest international rugby player and secondly Metcalfe is 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m).

Fumiaki Tanaka is a scrum half who plays for Japan and has been the shortest player in the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups. At just 166 cm tall and weighing 72 kg, Tanaka may be one of the smallest rugby players in the world but a very fierce one. Most importantly, Tanaka has played a pivotal role in the success of the Japanese Team.

World Rugby’s Team of the decade has 3 Springboks appear in the team

We cannot be prouder to have 3 Springboks featured in the World Rugby Team of the decade, with so many exceptional players in the world this is an immensely proud moment for all. Tendai Mtawarira, also known as Beast, was selected for the front row with Bismarck du Plessis. And Bryan Habana was the third chosen Springbok in the team. When South Africa won the Rugby World Cup in 2007 Habana and Bismarck were teammates, while all three these players were members of the Springboks’ when they beat the British & Irish Lions in the 2009 series. What a fun fact of rugby this is.

How did the Springboks get their name?

Our beloved Springbok team are known as the Bokke, Boks and Amabokoboko. In the run up to the RWC in ‘95 there was much controversy about keeping the Springbok emblem due to the apartheid era. It was agreed later that the Protea will be added to the jersey as this resembles some unity within sport in the country while the Springbok remains. Now how the name came about is a different story. When South Africa was to face the English team, the team’s first captain – Paul Roos – spontaneously chose the Springbok to prevent the British media from inventing a name for them.

Who is the leading international try scorer?

Daisuke Ohata from Japan is the leading try scorer in Rugby Union test matches with 69 tries under his belt in 58 caps which is impressive to say the least. He started his career playing in the Sevens Series and then moved into the national team. Furthermore in a close second it is our very own cheetah chasing Bryan Habana with 67 tries.

When it comes to the most tries scored in a Rugby World Cup there is an extraordinarily strong duo who share this achievement. The hard hitting and legendary Jonah Lomu from New Zealand and one of the best wingers ever Bryan Habana from South Africa.

Oldest and youngest international rugby player

Diego Ormaechea from Uruguay is the oldest player in Rugby World Cup history. Ormaechea was Uruguay’s captain at the time and is considered to be the best player in the country’s history. He was 40 when the tournaments started and retired at age 41 in 2001.

Mark Spencer ran out for Qatar in the 2012 HSBC Asian Five Nations Tournament against Uzbekistan. At the tender age of 57 he holds the record of being the oldest Test Rugby player. And believe it or not but this was his debut for the Middle Eastern state.

The Springboks became the first team to win the RWC after losing their opening match

The Springboks made history in 2019 by beating the English Roses in an epic final battle. They played with such grace and passion; they were unstoppable from the moment they ran out onto that field in Japan. One vision and one goal, which was achieved as a team. The Springboks are the only team to win the RWC after losing their opening game against New Zealand. This win has brought unity and hope to a country passionate about rugby and community.

Understandably there have been some changes in rugby. For example the Springboks being unable to play in the Rugby Championships in Australia in 2020. However, this has opened a new opportunity where the S.A rugby players are joining the Rainbow Cup in April 2021. It will be interesting to see which tournaments South Africa will end up playing in in the future. Bring on the Lions Tour 2021!

South Africa v Sri Lanka 1st Betway Cricket Test Summary

The 1st Betway Test Match was played between South Africa and Sri Lanka at Centurion’s SuperSport Park between 26th – 30th December 2020. As with all other sporting events during 2020 the match was played behind closed doors. At least we got to see some cricket. It also turned out to be a great victory for South Africa. Read our cricket test match summery below if you missed any of the Boxing Day test.

South Africa Test Form coming into this Series

South Africa lost their last away series in India 3-0 at the end of 2019. They were hoping to bounce back at home in the summer against the visiting England.

Things were looking good when the hosts won the 2019 Boxing day Test Match against England at Newlands. The high would not last long with South Africa going on to lose the series 3-1. The first back to back home series loss since the 1950s.

We have not had a lot of red ball cricket leading up to this series as a result of COVID-19. Needless to say we were very happy the match was on and ended with a result.

South African Players Receive Maiden test call-ups

Injuries to Kagiso Rabada – the world #6 test bowler – and all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius, meant reinforcements had to be called in. This made way for 2 new players.

Top-order batsman and former U-19 captain Raynard van Tonder & fast bowler Lutho Sipamla were added to the SA squad.

Sipamla made his debut and announced himself to the test world with match figures of 6 for 100 runs. Van Tonder who is currently the leading run scorer in the SA domestic four-day series will have to wait a little longer for his debut. Who knows, perhaps Wanderers could be his chance.

For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga made his debut and impressed with his bowling finishing the match with 4/171.

Sri Lanka 1st Innings Highlights

There was an early breakthrough for South Africa when Ngidi bowled Karunaratne with the visitors on 28. Not long after, Ngidi was in action again, although not as bowler this time. Ngidi took an easy catch at mid-on when Nortjie picked up his only scalp of the innings with the visitors on 54.

Mulder joined the party in the next over when he took the wicket of K. Perera with the batsmen on 16. The visitors’ score on 54/3.

The excitement was to be short-lived for the hosts when Chandimal and DM de Silva settled down and started rebuilding. The two put together a beautiful 4th wicket partnership of 131 when disaster struck. De Silva took a quick single while on 79 and what looked like a cramp ended up being a series ending hamstring tear. He will no longer play a role in the tour.

The score was on 185/3. Dickwela made his way to the middle and along with Chandimal put together a 5th wicket partnership of 99 before Mulder picked up is 2nd of the innings. Chandimal was caught off guard by some extra bounce in the pitch while playing at it and Faf taking an easy catch. He scored 85.

At Tea on the 1st Day, the visitors were standing on 290/4. Dickwela batted on but was caught LBW by that man Mulder on 49. Sri Lanka’s core on 296/5.

Sri Lanka’s Shanaka was the last man standing with an unbeaten 66 of 87 balls. He helped push the visitor’s 1st innings total to a respectable 396.

South Africa 1st Innings Highlights

Markram and Elgar started proceedings of in a hurry and quickly reached 50 runs in the 13th over. The two opening batsmen continued to shine and brought up the 100-run partnership in the 22nd over. They pushed on to the drinks break where the score stood on an unbeaten 129.

South Africa lost their 1st wicket, that of Markram, with the score on 141. An impressive first wicket partnership. Rassie van der Dussen was the man in at No.3 and along with Elgar put 59 runs on the board before Rassie nicked one to the keeper while on 15.

Former captain, Faf du Plessis, was the new man at the crease. Along with Elgar the in man and in the nervous 90s looked sure to score a 100. It was not to be for Dean this time. The next over Dean Elgar was caught & bowled by Shanaka, he was on 95. Still, a well-played innings.

Captain De Cock joined the former captain in the middle. He straight away showed that he was not going to hang around. With 3 quick 4s he raced to 18 runs of only 11 balls but then gave his wicket away to the Sri Lankan debutant Hasaranga.

The Faf and Bavuma Show

The hosts, having gone from 141 for no loss to 223/4 had to start rebuilding themselves. And that is just what they did.

Bavuma joined Faf and the pair proceeded to swing the match back in favour of the hosts with both batsmen sticking around for the remainder of the day. With du Plessis on 55 and Bavuma 41 and South Africa on 317/4 at close of play on Day 2. South Africa still trailing Sri Lanka’s 1st innings total by 79 runs.

Day 3 saw South Africa get off to a good start. Both batsmen adding to their overnight scores and reaching their 50s. At the time of drinks, Bavuma was on 64 and Faf on 76.

With the 5th wicket partnership standing on 179 runs, Bavuma slashed at one and missed. This did not stop the batsmen walking off leaving the commentators speechless as they watched the replays and noticing there was no contact between bat and ball. Bavuma out for 71.

South Africa Push on and Into the Lead

At lunch, the hosts had passed Sri Lanka’s 1st innings total and was standing on 435/5. The man of the moment Faf, unbeaten on 112, his 10th Test century.

Du Plessis and Mulder both had a few lucky escapes while building their 77-run partnership. Mulder finally succumbed to Hasaranga the next ball after being dropped on the ball before.

With Maharaj at the crease, he and Faf continued to make light work of the Sri Lankan bowling attack. The bowlers now were visibly exhausted. Faf brought up his 150 in the 114th over with South Africa on 498/6.

At Tea on the 3rd day, South Africa had reached a massive 565/6, a lead of 169 runs and the man of the moment, Faf du Plessis on 177 and Maharaj on an unbeaten 43. Faf and Maharaj brought up the 100-run stand not long after the tea break.

Cricket Test Records are there to be broken

With the score on 585/6 it also meant that it was South Africa’s highest Test total against Sri Lanka ever.

South Africa passed the 600-run mark in the 136th over with Faf on 196, just 4 runs away from a double ton.

It was not to be. With du Plessis on 199, he tried playing one over the top but did not get hold of it as well as he would have wanted to and ended up picking out the man at mid-on. His highest test score and probably one of the now 36-year old’s greatest innings.

Nortje was the next man in, and did not last long, losing his wicket for 0 after facing only 3 balls. Debutant Sipmala falling just 2 balls later, also for 0 with Maharaj the last man to fall for a well-played 73.

South Africa, now with the highest test score at SuperSport Park ended their innings on 621. A 1st innings lead of 225.

Sri Lanka 2nd Innings Highlights

With roughly 12 overs left to bowl on Day 3, Sri Lanka found them in a spot of bother when Ngidi clean bowled Karunaratne for 6 in the 3rd over with the visitors on 10. Ngidi followed up his performance of his previous over with another wicket, this time that of Mendis for 0.

At close of play on Day 3, Sri Lanka stood on 65/2 still trailing South Africa by a massive 160 runs.

Day 4 saw Kusal Perera on 33 and Dinesh Chandimal on 21 forged on for Sri Lanka. The pair battled on, adding 63 runs for the 3rd wicket partnership before Mulder bowled Chandimal for 25.

Sri Lanka on 99/4 and Perera the only truly recognised batsmen left standing, the visitors found it difficult to get going again, losing wickets regularly and their last 4 wickets for a measly 26 runs.

South Africa finally wrapped up the match by an innings and 45 runs and in the process earning an extra day’s rest.

Sipamla finishing his debut test match with figures of 6 wickets for 100 runs. Mulder playing only in his 2nd test also one of the other standout performers with both bat and ball. Bagging 5 wickets and adding 36 runs with the bat.

The Man of the match award went to Faf du Plessis with his best test score of 199.

Cricket Test Match Summary

Overall, it was a good cricket test match. Sri Lanka will be worried with the number of injuries they have picked up. They do have enough replacements available and have also said that they will not make wholesale changes to the team for the 2nd test.

South Africa can now not lose this series, but a draw will not be good enough. They want the series win, and Sri Lanka will not lie down or just give it to the host on a silver platter, it will have to be earned.

The teams next head to Wanderers for the 2nd Betway Cricket Test – the New Years’ test. Play scheduled to start on 3rd of January 2021.

No confirmation on starting 11 yet for South Africa, but we hope to see another debutant or 2 in action.

Betway is the sponsors of this test series along with being a main sponsor for South African cricket. They are also of the most well know and biggest online sportsbooks in South Africa. Read our detailed review of Betway and sign up for your free welcome offer if you do not have an account yet.

Bye 2020, hello 2021!

Bye 2020, hello 2021!

The COVID pandemic has interrupted our lives in many ways and brought the sports industry for a few months to a standstill. As this surreal year draws to an end we wanted to do a quick recap of the various changes we have seen in 2020 and what to expect for our 2021 betting.

Online betting

Due to the pandemic the betting behavior of many of us changed. Our beloved local bookies had to temporarily close and we had to turn to online betting. While some of us already had a favourite online bookmaker for others online betting was completely new territory. As we punters had to adapt so did the bookmakers themselves. Some bookies used this to also finally move with the times. As a result, the likes of Sportsbet and Firstbet went online on the Turfsport platform. We have also seen new betting sites enter the South African market. Palace Bet, Millionaires Gaming Sports Betting and SpotonBets are aiming especially at online and mobile bettors and strike with excellent user-friendly platforms and highly entertaining betting options.

We hope that our detailed reviews helped some of you to find your best betting site in South Africa.

Esports and Virtuals

While betting shops were closed our preferred sporting events were also not available. No Premier League Football, no horse racing, no cricket or rugby matches. In the absence of our usual sports we discovered new games to bet on. Esports and Virtual Sports have both seen a big rise during the past months. And they are both here to stay. Virtual Games offer us an immense variety of fast-paced, regular game action with numerous betting options. The games portfolio of Jika Sports, part of Kiron, has launched in SA in June 2020 and since then has been integrated with major betting sites including Betway, Hollywood Bets and World Sports Betting.

Instant win live games

2020 has been the year of instant win live games. Evolution Gaming entered the SA market early in the year. Their live games range is outstanding and leads the way in live dealer games. But more and more players also discovered the fun, fast-paced Betgames. Whether lotto, blackjack, poker or baccarat – Betgames had a version for all of us.

But that’s not all. Lotto Instant Win (LIW) games launched at Hollywoodbets and we are sure to see these lotto-style games very soon across more bookmakers.

While we love lucky numbers and lottery style games everyone likes games based on a spinning wheel. These days we have quite a big variety to choose from: Evolution’s Dreamcatcher, Spin2Win and Spin2Wheels by Golden Race or Pragmatic Play’s Mega Wheel. We all love to spin and win or to bet and win.

Betting 2021 – what’s coming up?

For 2021 we expect a few more new betting sites to enter the South African market which will bring us even more choice. And with it more game providers for even more entertaining betting options. So overall 2021 looks like a good year for online sports betting, especially when looking at the sports calendar.

2021 will see a huge sporting calendar. Major tournaments and sport events were postponed while others were scheduled for 2021 anyway. Aside from the usual soccer leagues and tournaments (Premier League, PSL, Champions League) let’s have a look at what we can look forward to over the next 12 months:

The future of horse racing betting in 2021

Horse racing has always been very popular with South African punters. Billions of rands were bet on horse races in a usual year. But 2020 has seen some drastic changes and it has been a tricky year for the horse racing industry. The pandemic caused quite some disruption with many races being cancelled or postponed. This resulted in many forms of traditional betting coming to a halt. Therefore, South Africans bettors turned to alternative sports and we have seen a rise of e-sports and simulated sports betting. Online bookmakers reacted and added additional betting opportunities onto their sites. Aside from virtual games, including virtual horse racing, Betgames and Live Games were added for further entertainment. So what is to expect from horse racing betting in 2021?

Less betting sites offer betting on horses

While the world is still upside down some races are back. Nevertheless, over the recent weeks we have seen a decline in traditional online horse racing betting being offered across South African betting sites. New operators such as SpotOnBets launch without horse racing betting. Others, such as Gbets, removed horses from their betting offering.

Offering horse racing betting is quite challenging for operators due to the following reasons:

  • Extra licensing costs
  • Additional feed fees
  • Tax on horse racing

In addition, horse racing punters are quite loyal and stick with their favourite operators. This makes it very hard for new betting sites to get traction and at the end is not worth the effort.

Therefore, we see a lot more sites without horse racing betting which seems to be the new standard for 2021. While we understand the commercial difficulties on operator side we like horse racing betting and therefore it is a plus point for us if its part the sports betting portfolio.

But if you like betting on the horses do not fear. The are still a variety of bookmakers available that offer you fantastic horse betting entertainment in 2021.

We hope that in 2021 we can go back to being at the races. In the meantime we enjoy the betting opportunities available on current horse racing events.

What is online Keno?

Let us give you some history on where Keno originated from before we plunge into what Keno actually is. The word Keno has Latin and French roots and it is guesstimated that the game originated in China. Subsequently an ancient city in time of war was saved by the invention of the game. Hence the demand of the game helped with the raising of funds to build the Great Wall of China. The game started with the Chinese playing the game on a sheet of paper with Chinese characters. Then in the nineteenth century the game was introduced to the US. Keno quickly caught on and became a beloved gambling game in America.

Keno is a game of chance and very similar to both Lotto and Bingo, you predict your numbers that will be drawn at the next game. The ball numbers normally range from 1 to 80 and you are paid out in accordance with how many numbers you have matched in a draw and how much you wagered on the numbers. If your number is chosen as a result you win. Not many bookmakers offer these games as yet but it is just a matter of time before they will start appearing on most sites. Therefore it is highly recommended that you try online Keno games for free to familiarise yourself before you start betting your hard earned money.

Online Keno wording and how to play

  • Spot: Each number you select is called a Keno spot
  • The ticket, also reffered to as the sheet: has 8 rows and 10 columns
  • The Race: The game you are playing

First, select the spots (numbers) you think may win, you can choose between 12 and 15 on most sites. Then place your bets, each bookmaker may vary on the betting options. Afterwards choose your races and how many times you want to bet the same spot (up to 10 times). Players can place bets and watch via live video streaming the random draw of twenty balls out of eighty (Keno 20/80). Always check the wagering requirements and terms before playing.

Difference between Keno and Lotto

In Keno, you are paid out according to how many numbers you bought and the way you wagered it initially. With a lottery, your prize depends on how many numbers you landed and how many other participants chose the same numbers as you. A big difference between online lotto and online keno is also how fast the games are played.

As a beginner it is recommended to choose lesser spots at first and bet small amounts until you grasp the game on a higher level. The games are simple and straightforward therefore you will be playing confidently in no time.

Lottostar currently offers their own variety of Kino games and they draw every 5 minutes. If you choose to play Kino 12 you have to select 12 numbers between 1 and 80, if you choose Kino 15 you have to select 15 numbers and so forth. We will go into more detail on these games in the Keno review. Lottoland have just added a new Keno game called 24/7, which is their version of Keno games.

Golden Race is one of the providers of Keno in South Africa. They are a leading developer and provider of outstanding virtual sports and betting solutions.

Keno is an appealing game filled with excitement and the main aim is to sit back and have fun. So have a look at our recommended bookmakers and operators who offer Keno and take your pick!

A beginner’s guide to online sports betting

The Bet& Win team has put together a complete beginner’s guide on how to start betting online so you can make the best sportsbook decision for yourself.

Step 1: Do your sportsbets research

There is no one size fits all when it comes to sportsbooks. The best betting site for another punter might not be the best option for you.

A good starting point to discover the currently best betting sites is by looking at our bookie listings, categorised by favourite sports, and our comprehensive reviews. Depending on the sports you want to bet on some sites might be a better match for you than others. For example, horse racing betting, is not available on all SA bookies.

We consider some key criteria for reviewing betting sites and you need to assess these for yourself as well to find the sportsbook that suits your personal requirements:

1. Safe and fair gambling

Online betting requires a high level of trust. One of the most frequent questions we receive is if a sports betting site is legit and operates under fair terms. You find all license information usually in the footer of each betting site. We have already covered this part for you as all betting sites we list are licensed as per SA law. Therefore, when choosing a sportsbook listed on betandwin.co.za you can be sure you play with a trustworthy, reliable operator that also values your safety and privacy.

Licensed bookmakers need to comply with very strict procedures and ensure state-of-the-art security encryption and data protection software as well as fair gambling.

Tip: Always play with a licensed operator!

2. Bonus offers and promotions

All sports betting sites offer new players some sort of welcome offer. This ranges from free sign-up bonuses and/or a deposit match bonus on your 1st deposit to welcome bonus bundles. Sportsbook welcome offers are a good way to test a site and its functionality. Plus, you can boost your balance. But make sure you always read the available bonus T&Cs so you know what you are signing up for.

Some bonuses are valid on sportbets while others are also valid only on casino games. The right bonus and hence sportsbook therefore also depends on what you want to bet on.

Additionally, also have a look at operators’ promotions pages to see their regular bonuses and promotions. While it is nice to be welcomed with a good offer a great betting site aims to reward loyal players continuously.

Tip: Be clear on what you want to bet on. Risk-free sign-up bonuses and free bets are great to test a sportsbook before depositing. Always read the terms and conditions. In addition, our free bets article gives a good overview about best free bets offers currently available.

3. Range of sports, markets and games

Modern sportsbooks feature a huge range of sports with a variety of markets. You get access to hundreds of sport events every day. Not all bookmakers have the same sports available. Therefore, if you e.g. want to bet on horse racing make sure that you check that betting on horses is actually on offer. The same apply for esports or virtuals. On Bet & Win we have recommendations for bookmakers especially for rugby, cricket, soccer, horse racing, esports and lotto.

Aside from standard betting options some bookies have special features such as Cash Out or Bet Builder which are great enhancements.

In addition, many betting sites boost their betting offer with online lotto betting and instant casino games. Especially through the a good variety of additional games sportsbooks can differentiate themselves nicely. Betgames, Evolution live casino games, slots, lucky numbers, and virtual games… with more and more game providers being integrated the entertainment increases. On of the latest games to launch in SA is Spribe’s flagship game Aviator. This social multiplayer betting game is surely going to disrupt the betting scene in a positive way.

Tip: If you are looking for a particular sport or game to bet on check that your choice is available on a betting site before signing up.

4. Mobile optimisation

Most SA sportsbooks are using responsive platforms. Some even have a native app in the app stores. Hence, you can expect a seamless gaming experience across all devices and all games will fit and run perfectly across most smartphone and tablet screen sizes. Whether you play on Android, iOS, or Windows devices you will always have the same experience.

But some bookies are more mobile-friendly than others. Easy navigation and layout, mobile payment methods and the option to bet data free are just a few additional points to consider. If you already know you are playing mainly on your mobile have a look at our best mobile betting sites.

Tip: Test various bookmakers directly from your mobile device!

5. Customer support

There is always a time when you have questions or issues and therefore need to get in touch with support. These days the support teams are usually on hand via various methods including live chat, email, WhatsApp, or phone -ideally 24/7. This ensures you get answers fast and do not waste any time.

Tip:Have a look at the available support channels and possible even test the customer service before signing up to see if they value your custom.

6. Variety of payment methods

Sportsbooks offer a wide selection of payment methods to cater for varied punters preferences. For deposits and withdrawals alike, we appreciate fast transactions with low costs.

The most popular payment methods for South African betting sites are:

  • Debit & Credit Cards (VISA/MasterCard)
  • EFT
  • Vouchers, including OTT Voucher, 1 Voucher or Blu Voucher
  • Direct Bank Transfers

For details about these payment methods have a look at our detailed banking guide. It is important that you know which payment option you would like to use as it makes selecting the right sportsbook easier.

Please be aware that not all payment options will be available for payouts. While depositing is usually done very quickly, payouts might take longer. Sportsbooks have to follow strict procedures before paying out winnings. Your account needs to be FICA verified as the betting operator needs to ensure they are paying the right person. Some withdrawal methods have also a longer processing time than others.

Tip: Decide which payment method you want to use and look for bookies that process withdrawals quickly.

At the end of step 1 you should have researched and evaluated your options and found a sports betting site that offers what you are looking for.

There might also be more than one sportsbook you would like to try out. It often makes sense to test a few sportsbooks at once and decide later on which one is your preferred one.

Step 2: Open your online sports betting account

Signing up for a free online betting account is the next step before you can start placing your bets on sports, lotto and games.

1. Sign up your sportsbook account

The first step to start playing with your selected online sportsbook is to register. Registration forms are usually very easy and straightforward. Enter your personal details, pick your username and a secure password. To use your account fully you will need to confirm the registration. This sometimes includes to verify your email address so make sure you check that you have entered your email address correctly and then your email inbox and spam folder. In addition, you will need to submit your FICA documents.

Tip: If you need more information about FICA check out our special FICA article.

2. Enjoy available sports betting freebies

Many betting operators reward new players with a free bonus or free bets after registration without any deposit needed. This is a great way to get started before you deposit your own money. Ensure you read and understand the T&Cs of sign up bonuses. If in doubt, clarify possible questions with the support team before opting in.

Tip: Sportsbooks with a free signup bonus are labelled with ‘Free Bonus’ in our listings.

3. Deposit and claim your welcome offer

As a new player you can usually take advantage of a variety of welcome bonuses on top of a sign-up freebie. The most common welcome offers are:

  • Fist deposit bonus: your first deposit amount will be matched up to a certain amount. For example, bet.co.za offers you a 100% first deposit match bonus up to R5000.
  • Welcome bonus package: you will receive a bonus your initial deposits. For example, Supabets offers a welcome bonus bundle up to R5000 on your first three deposits.
  • High roller bonus: if you want to play with higher amounts ask for a special high roller bonus. These can be available on request but might require additional verification checks.

Tip: For the latest overview of the best betting bonus offers look at our list of best betting sites.

Step 3: Start to bet & win online

You have tried your chosen sportsbook by using a free sign-up bonus and have deposited money in your account? Then it is time to have fun and bet to win.

2 additional points we wanted to touch on are the betting range as well as how to withdraw your winnings.

Betting range

The range of betting options online is very versatile. Online sportsbooks try to make it easy for you to find your way around and usually group the offering into categories. Below are the common ones:

  • Sports: some bookmakers concentrate on a limited number of sports which usually includes the most favourite sports in SA (rugby, cricket, soccer and horse racing). But these days you can bet on much more and therefore the lists can be extensive. MMA, basketball, darts or golf are just a few more sports you place bets on across many bookmakers.
  • Live Betting: if the sportsbook offers live in-play betting the related events are usually available via a special tab. Alternatively, they feature a ‘Live’ label.
  • Lotto & Lucky Numbers: here you will find all national and international lotteries you can bet on.
  • Betgames: simple, live instant wins games that are popular with SA bettors
  • Live Games: The closest you will come online to a brick-and-mortar casino experience! Choose your table and challenge the live dealers in Live Blackjack, Live Roulette or Live Baccarat. Or participate in game show live games such as Crazy Times or Dreamcatcher.
  • Virtual Games (such as Jika): these games have seen an increased demand during the COVID pandemic and are here to stay. Try pre-recorded greyhound racing or participate in the virtual football league.

At the moment a lot of sportsbooks integrate more live instant win games and slots due to punters’ demand for a more varied, fun offering. There is usually a search functionality available which is especially helpful on mobile devices.

Tip: Many betting sites allow access Betgames and Live Games without participating. Just by watching the live stream you will already see if you like a certain game and can familiarise yourself with the betting options. If you are interested in the Spina Zonke slots also have a look at the our Spina Zonke demo play.

Quick, easy withdrawals

Let’s be honest! While we all play for fun and entertainment, we also want to have the feeling of success and want to win money while betting online. Hence, at one point we would like to withdraw our winnings from our betting account. In step 1 you already evaluated payment options and know which ones are available. Please note that there might be special security checks at this point as the operator needs to ensure it pays winnings to the right person.

Online sports betting for beginners – top tips

We hope the above helps you on your journey to find the best online betting site for yourself.

Lastly, here are our top tips for betting newbies in a nutshell:

  1. Do your research: our detailed reviews together with your individual preferences are a good starting point for finding the best betting site for you. Remember, we only list bookmakers that are licensed, safe and reliable.
  2. Explore the sports and game selection in advance to ensure what you want to bet on is available
  3. Always read the terms and conditions so you know what you are opting in for
  4. Consider the whole promotional offering: while new player offers are great it says a lot about an online bookmaker how they treat regular customers. Therefore, check the promotions pages and possible VIP and loyalty programs.
  5. Review payment methods and processing times
  6. Set your betting budget and stay within your limits: betting should be fun and entertaining. Therefore, only bet what you could afford to lose and stick to your set budget.

Now, over to you! Sign up with the online betting site of your choice. We hope you have a fun and entertaining time while betting & winning.

Chasing the sun: The Springboks

Chasing the sun: The Springboks

In the period 2015- 2017 Springbok rugby was not much more than a glimmer of its previous self. Record defeats, inconsistency, and a troubled locker room was the status quo for the once mighty South African team. Enter rugby wizard Rassie Erasmus, and the rest is history. Chasing the Sun, the recently released rugby documentary, chronicles the journey of Springboks rugby from the lowest of lows to the success of 2019.

Low point for the Springboks

The shock loss to Japan at the 2015 Rugby World Cup will always be a day to forget for SA Rugby. And while the Springbok team at the time managed to redeem themselves by securing third place at the rugby showpiece, it really was the start of some troubled times for the national team. In this period the Springboks lost for the first time in their history to both Argentina and Italy. Respectable rugby nations, but not generally regarded in the same breath as South Africa. Add to this the 57-0 record defeat to New Zealand in 2017, and it was plain to see that the Springboks were in a bad space. The first moment of change we witness in the documentary is when Rassie and Jacques Nienaber decide that they want to play a part in resurrecting the wounded Springboks.

The Catalyst

Rassie and Jacques attended the 2017 Dublin match between the Springboks and Ireland as fans. After being part of the crowd for the 38-3 loss (another record defeat), both agreed that they would put their hands up to assist SA rugby. At the time Rassie was director of rugby at Munster. His family and him had made the move to Ireland and had since settled. The decision to come back to SA was not an easy one. In January 2018 Rassie replaced Allister Coetzee as head coach of the Springboks. With effectively only two seasons to build a team and prepare for the 2019 World Cup, the task was never going to be easy. Rassie has years of playing and coaching success at the highest level and is clearly not intimidated by this fact.

Chasing the Sun provides the public with a first-person view of what it was like in the Springbok camp from day 1 of the Rassie Erasmus regime. The insight is truly amazing.

Changing the mould

Turning around a negative team culture is never an easy feat. The fact that the Springboks were ranked a career low of 7th in the world in 2018 was a clear sign of what state SA rugby was in during that period. In Chasing the Sun, we are witness to the changes Rassie and his management team made right from the beginning. How the team culture changes over this period is truly something to behold. No topics were sacred in the effort to turn things around.

Least of all that of transformation: a contentious issue in the post-apartheid years in South Africa. Rassie addressed this openly and honestly with his squad- there were no hidden agendas. The result we see is that all players felt included, and part of the greater picture. Everyone in the squad was there on merit, and they all needed to contribute equally. The appointment of Siya Kolisi as team captain was the next big positive step made.

A positive change

The impact of Siya becoming the first black Springbok rugby captain was massive. Not just for South African rugby but for South Africa as a whole. With Siya leading the team, one felt that we were finally moving in the right direction as the diverse nation that we are.

The series win against England in 2018 indicated the potential of the new-look Springboks. While only achieving a 50% success rate in test matches played in 2018, the Springboks nevertheless displayed a noticeable change in the way they played the games. Beating the All Blacks in New Zealand was the one major aim for Rassie in 2018.

And we can see how this plays out from the players and coaching perspective in the documentary. Winning this game was massive for the squad’s belief. One could argue that the renewed passion and intensity all began when the players felt equally included as a national unit. The message is clear that egos were to be left at the door, we are regularly exposed to Rassie drilling this message home within the squad.

2019

Despite the noticeable attitude change in 2018, the Springboks were still under pressure to deliver winning results in the build up to the Rugby World Cup. Winning the shortened Rugby Championship and drawing away from home against New Zealand were major achievements for the team. During this time, we are introduced to the idea that Rassie had of the 5-2 replacement split. The physicality of South African rugby is well documented. Erasmus always believed in using this advantage as much as possible. Essentially a replacement front row would come on in the second half of a game. While risky, this proves to be a masterful move in the Rugby World Cup especially.

Rugby World Cup

We all know how the Rugby World Cup played out. However what Chasing the Sun does very well is it exposes the rugby fan to what transpired behind the scenes. The thought process that went behind so many key moments and decisions is clear to see. If we had to retrospectively re-watch the games now, I believe we would be even more impressed with how the Springbok team won the title. No stone was left un-turned! Team tactics are laid bare and the reasoning behind some of the decisions made is clear.

Another great feature of Chasing the Sun: The Springboks is the commentary from many rugby pundits world over. The mastermind behind the Squidge Rugby (the popular YouTube rugby analyst), Robbie Owen even adds his input a few times. The Springbok success came at the right time for South Africa as a nation. The public needed something to be positive about in 2019. Chasing the Sun has given us the opportunity to relive this golden time once again.

The world of sporting documentaries has evolved over time into some truly impressive productions. None more so than The Last Dance- the recent Michael Jordan documentary. Chasing the Sun finds itself in the same if not better position as one of the finest sports productions ever made. Winning the Rugby World Cup is a massive accomplishment. However being able to put out a documentary that accurately captures the feelings and emotions of the players, while at the same time engrossing the viewer is an achievement in its own right.

If you haven’t seen Chasing the Sun: The Springboks yet you are missing out. So head over to DSTV. But before you do, have a look at our best rugby betting sites for some rugby betting options. And have a read through our article on the 3 RWC wins for the Springboks.
