The Spanish Christmas Lottery El Gordo

Christmas is coming and as every year there is one event that gets us even more excited about the festive season: El Gordo de Navidad, the Spanish Christmas lottery! Also known as Sorteo Extraordinario de Navida it is the highlight of the Spanish Christmas season and also one of the main lottery events of the year. Nearly every person in Spain is getting involved and buys tickets for the chance to win the big prize.

El Gordo – Background

The El Gordo Christmas lottery is a well-established lottery. It goes back all the way to 1812 and since then has never been cancelled. No civil wars and hence also not the COVID pandemic can stop it. Therefore, as every year, it will take place this year on 22 December 2020.

El Gordo is the biggest lottery in the world, paying out prizes worth over €2 billion each year. The amount of sold tickets determines the final prize pool with 70% of the profits generated from tickets sales being paid out. It is not a standard lottery as El Gordo follows a raffle style. 2 machines are used for the draw. The first machine contains 100,000 balls with numbers 00000 to 99999 and draws the winning numbers. The second machine contains 18707 balls with a prize written on each and draws the corresponding prizes.

Since 2011 the tickets have a 5-digit number combination from 00000 to 99999. Therefore, there are 100,000 unique ticket numbers available. As this would limit the amount of people who can participate there are several so-called series. There are 170 series and hence a total of 17 million tickets available.

While 1 full ticket costs €200 you can buy parts of it. Each ticket is divided into 10 identical sub-tickets (decimos) who are available for €20 each. If you would buy the full winning ticket you would win €4 million while if 10 players had a decimo then each would receive €400,000.

Why is the lottery called El Gordo?

El Gordo translates to “the fat one”. The name comes from the main prize, el gordo, which is set at a massive and hence “fat” 4 million Euro. Aside from this top prize there is a total amount of over 2 billion Euro paid out in different prize tiers every year. This makes it the largest lottery draw globally.

On 28 November 2020 all eyes will be on the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Mike Tyson will enter the ring against Roy Jones Jr for a much-anticipated exhibition boxing fight. The fight was announced on 23 July 2020 and originally scheduled for September before being pushed back to November. For once COVID-19 was not the reason but rather the aim of the organisers to maximise event revenue.

So, what can we expect on 28 November or rather early morning on 29 November for us in South Africa? Let’s start with a little walk down memory lane and look at both opponents.

Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson aka ‘Iron Mike’ is respected as one of the best heavyweight boxers of all time. He became a boxing legend after he became the youngest heavyweight world champion in boxing history in 1986. His career as well as his personal life have always been vicious and seen some ups and downs. He is one of a few boxers who managed to reclaim a heavyweight championship after losing it. At the same time there are also the moments Mike cannot be proud of, such as having a go at Holyfield’s ear or various off the ring escapades.

Roy Jones Jr.

3 years younger than Tyson, Roy Levesa Jones Jr. only retired 2 years ago on a high note from professional boxing. He is a very versatile boxer who secured multiple championship titles in 4 weight classes. He is the only boxer so far who began his professional boxing career in light middleweight before moving on to win a heavyweight title. Jones Jr. is well known for his left hook. This might have brought him his nickname “Captain Hook” and also many of his wins. He won 66 out of 75 fights, 47 by knockout. Similar to Tyson he is vicious and we can expect nothing else than a real boxing thriller for Saturday night.

GoSloto is a privately run lottery and operated by Orgolot with support by the Russian government. As it is organised by a national entity it is completely safe, legal, and regulated. You can only take part directly from Russia but many betting sites in South Africa offer various GoSloto lotto draws as part of their lucky numbers portfolio – and you can bet on the outcom.

One of the most popular lotteries within the GoSloto family is GoSloto 6/45. Other draws offered are GoSloto 7/49, 5/36, 6/36 and 4/20.

The different Russian lotto draws explained

GoSloto 6/45

Launched in November 2008 the aim of this lotto draw is, as the name suggests, to match 6 numbers out of 45. GoSloto 645 has 5 winning divisions. GoSloto 7/49

This version is a classic lotto game where you have to predict 7 numbers between 1-49 correctly to win the massive jackpot which starts at 100 million rubles. The draws take part 5 times each day. This lottery has five prize categories with different payout for 3, 4,5 and 6 matched numbers.

GoSloto 5/36

To participate you have to select 5 numbers from 1-36 in Panel 1 and one number between 1-4 from Panel 2. There are 5 draws daily and tickets, starting at 40 rubels, can be bought up to 20 minutes before each draw.

GoSloto 4/20

To take part in the GoSloto 4 out of 20 draw you select 4 numbers between 1-20 in Panel 1 and another 4 numbers between 1-20 in Panel 2. Draws take place twice per day with a single ticket costing 100 rubels. There are 12 prize levels. When you can match at least 2 numbers in each panel you win a prize.
